I've got an old copy of Robin Hood, and just recently acquired a copy of an old King Arthur which is by far the oldest style of writing I've ever seen

I have now finished reading And Another Thing... (the sixth book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-trilogy).

It's a good book, but while reading it, I constantly had a certain thought in my mind: "Douglas Adams didn't write this." I'm not sure if it's because I subconsciously noticed something wasn't the same or if it was simply because I knew Douglas Adams didn't write it...

I love the first five books and I had mixed feelings about a new book being written by a different author...

It's still a good book, though, and I did enjoy reading it.

nah i think he's good, though a bit rusty Razz though whats cool is that a lot of the deutsch he knows is in schwabish so it's slightly different pronunciation from your typical deutsch. though it is funny that there aren't any german speakers from germany on the forum.

Re: Oprah Winfrey's Book Club (The Book Thread)

Post  Raya on Tue Feb 08, 2011 1:53 pm

Finished reading The Sable Quean, the latest (and last but one Sad) Redwall book. Here's my little review of it.

The basic plot is that Vilaya, the titular Sable Quean, is kidnapping young woodlanders in order to blackmail their elders into submission. Two hares, Buckler the bladesmaster and his friend Diggs, join forces with the Redwallers to find Vilaya's secret hideout and save the babes and to seek revenge on her deadly commander, Zwilt the Shade.

It's...not too amazing, to be honest. What starts as a tense buildup, with the woodlanders, Guosim and Redwallers slowly realising the children are missing, quickly gets bogged down in too many sideplots. Several escaped Dibbuns get captured by an insane hedgehog for a few chapters. Diggs develops a split personality that does nothing bar get a few laughs. A water vole cooks lots of soup. The worst of all however is
Spoiler:
Zwilt turns on Vilaya and stabs her, leaving her for dead. She survives, saved by a stoat whose mate was killed by Zwilt, and seeks revenge on Zwilt. Nothing. Happens. She sees Zwilt attack the Abbey, waits in the bushes then gets killed by a badger. That's it. What was even the point of her surviving if she did nothing afterwards? The only good thing about the entire subplot was that the stoat says she loved her mate. A vermin who's not a stereotype, yay!

There's also an overload of characters, meaning no one gets proper development. It got to the stage where I was getting confused on who was what species. There's Vilaya and her retinue, Buckler and the rescue party, Redwallers, the Guosim, the captive Dibbuns...there's too much going on. Then right near the end a badgermaid turns up from nowhere, apparently for no reason other than to rescue the Dibbuns from a sideplot and build a catapult. Which is a shame as several characters, such as Buckler and Zwilt, could have ranked up with the greatest of Redwall characters, but instead they get lost in whatever is going on in the plot.

Good things about the book? Buckler for a start, a hare from Salamandastrom who doesn't speak like an upper class twit. Then we get Axtel, a warhammer wielding Bloodwrathing mole. Who still has a Somerset accent. It's a shame these characters don't get the chance to develop- if there had been buildup about the final showdown between Buckler and Zwilt it would have been glorious.

Overall opinion? It's alright, but certainly far from the best Redwall book. A promising premise and interesting characters just get bogged down in sideplots and too many personalities. Get if it you're a Redwall fan, but otherwise I'd go with another title. It's not bad, but it's not brilliant either.
