Aaron's Video Game Poetry Corner Hootenanny Thread

Post  Aaron on Thu May 07, 2009 12:21 am

A place where I'll post video game themed poems for comment and critique, collect ideas for games to write poems about, and a place where we can all share video game poems we find!

I was going to post a haiku, but that would waste the point of this being your thread.

So before I post anything else...

Post  Aaron on Thu May 07, 2009 12:36 am

Hi all. As mentioned in the "Who is the Dismemberer" thread, I am a writer who has written a couple of poems based on Nintendo, and decided recently to begin working on a manuscript length collection of Video Game themed poems (mostly Nintendo related, probably, cuz that's what I grew up loving the most, but I"m open to other platforms). A few folks expressed interest in reading them, so I'm gonna occasionally post the finished products, or perhaps sometimes sections as I write them, for comment, critique, and enjoyment.

Along with that, I figure that, since anyone reading this is probably my most target of audience, if you have games you would like to see a poem written about, let me know and I'll put it on the list, see if anything comes of it! Huzzah! Here are the games I've already got or have been suggested...

Mario Bros (already written, will post in a bit)
Metroid (researching and fleshing framework out)
Dragon Warrior (Concept fleshed out, doing research)
Shadowgate (Concept being fleshed out)
Bubble Bobble (Requested by forum member...I'll see what I can do!)
The Legend of Zelda (My all time favorite franchise...I have some haikus about Zelda, but I would want much more than that eventually)
Adventures of Lolo
I also have written and published a general Nintendo themed poem in a National Anthology of Slam Poems (I do performance poetry). I'll post that too, as well as a link to the anthology in case you wanted to purchase it.

Again, thanks for expressing interest. I'm pretty excited about sharing these things with this community. I will also offer a warning: I have and will take creative license with what some might at times consider the "canonical" narratives of some characters. I do so with full knowledge that I am doing so, but if we all love TTWB like we obviously do, then I don't forsee this being an issue. However, thought it was a good idea to say that if your comment/critique is "That's not what Lil Mac's Jab REALLY looked like..." then you might want to save it. Trust me, I care a lot about Nintendo, and if I deviate from the canon, it's done with purpose in order to explore the possibilities these characters and narratives have built within.

So, thanks a lot, and enjoy! I look forward to constructive comments/critiques/etc...

Here is a general I love Nintendo poem that I wrote in 2004

Post  Aaron on Thu May 07, 2009 12:49 am

This poem has been published in a National Poetry Slam anthology, and I have performed it in shows across the country for the last five years. Here is a link to the anthology it is published in for those interested:

http://www.poetryslam.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=195&category_id=6&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=92

Also, I have this poem in a chapbook that I sell at shows. If someone is ever interested in buying one, just let me know and we'll set up a backchannel. The chapbooks are always five bucks plus shipping. However, the poem is also here FOR FREE, but if I didn't at least put out the merch pitch, I'd probably be mad at meself eventually! Enjoy!

NESter’s Wild Rose Garden Of Philosophical Bric-A-Brac

When I was a child
I knew EVERYTHING,
had already learned everything
I ever needed to know
and I sure as hell didn’t learn it from
parents,
churches,
peers,
or in kindergarten,

FUCK NO!

No…
you see,
I studied at the feet
of the greatest font of wisdom
ever devised by man,
the post-modern Delphi…
The Nintendo Entertainment System.

Allegories became interactive.
Archetypes were created,
paradigms reset.
In my grip was the password,
the key to the next
intellectual
spiritual level and
I was a willing apostle.
So let us heed now
the words of
these 8 bit prophets.

Castlevania taught me that good does exist
and that with silver tinged boomerang in hand
it can always triumph over evil.

Contra made me feel proud of my country
even while Metal Gear simultaneously showed
that we should always question
our governments authority.

Bugertime did not adequately prepare me to enter
into the food service industry,
and Paperboy…
Paperboy, you were my first glimpse
into the fact that homosexuals are people too.

The Legend of Zelda proved that anything worth doing
is worth doing twice, even if that second time is really
ridiculously fucking hard.

Mike Tyson’s Punch out showed me that
the little guy can overcome adversity
and King Hippo

Duck Hunt done showed me that dog’s are jerks,
and Metroid confirmed that not only are
women able to be sexy, independent, and kick ass
but that they are even moreso if they have an
Ice Beam affixed to the end of their arm.

But from all the wisdom I’ve culled
from these small grey Bibles,
I learned the most from the Rev.’s Mario.

I learned from them that it was all right to be the fat kid,
that bullies are just as weak as me underneath
they’re just hiding under shells,
and as I later authenticated in college
if you ingest mushrooms and random glowing weeds
you do become bigger,
stronger,
and able to shoot fire out of your hands…

Most of all,
those two pudgy plumbers taught me
that the true heroes of the world are
not always soldiers,
paladins,
or Kid Icarus.

That sometimes the hero is the plumber,
the electrician
the taxi cab driver.
Sometimes they are my parents,
blue collar workers,
men and women who never asked
for anything special
never expected anything extraordinary
and yet somehow
somehow they have a achieved a greatness
that doesn’t come with guns,
magic,
or extra lives.

So if you see me in the arcade
popping tokens into machines
as if they were starving,
please do not mistake me for some
generation who-gives-a-shit kid
with nothing better to do
because I am praying.

Prostrating myself at the altar
whose electronic edges and
silicon script
reveal three immutable truths:

1. You don’t always win.
2. You never truly lose.
3. Life is a lot like the game.
The only way to learn is to
just sit down, plug in, and play…..

Thanks a lot! It's one of my favorite pieces to perform, and always gets the most random people at shows enjoying it. It's shown me how large the video game nation truly is. Glad you enjoyed it.

Mario Bros. Poem

Post  Aaron on Sun May 10, 2009 11:38 pm

This is the title piece from my newest chapbook. Hope you enjoy it.

Another Castle

1-1

Beautiful.

It is so beautiful
here that you would think
a picnic was about to
spontaneously erupt out of the
verdant, pipe strewn ground,
or that amidst this impossible
cerulean sky a multi-hued
rainbow would bust out
with a promise of golden quests
and leprachaunic shenanigans.

But am I here to enjoy this beauty?

No.

Instead, I’m getting ready
to wander this fucking kingdom at
the request of some talking fungus
to save some chick from a
giant fire breathing lizard
after barely recovering from
saving some other chick
from a giant barrel slinging ape.

I have heard it said that there is a
sucker born every minute.
Well I got news for you.
One very special minute many years ago,
a Super Sucker was born,
and he still wears his red onesie in public.

1-2

Did I mention that I’m claustrophobic?

1-3

Almost done.
I don’t know where they got the idea
that I love or am good at jumping,
but they were wrong.

1-4

……………
Seriously?
………
I mean, fuck…..
Can you….can you at least
tell me which castle she is in?

2-2

Did I mention yet that I’m aquaphobic?

3-1

Sinster.

The Mushroom Kingdom is as sinister at night
as it is beautiful in the daytime.
At night, the flash of the distant
cannon gunpowder blasts complements
the dull thud that warns of the approaching bullets,
allowing me some small window
to leap above their cutting skin.

I almost gave up.
Something…something drives me forward now, however.
Something I cannot explain.
As if I feel someone beyond me, yet also me,
urging me on, pushing the buttons that make me
fight on past the weariness, past the numbness.

I suppose one could call that God,
if one were so inclined.

4-2

Another dungeon.
Another mushroom.
Another flower.
Another macabre melee.
Another scene.

I have learned to break bricks
with my bloodless fists.,
to expel flame out of fingertips.

I have become sorcerer.
Death Savant.
I have rained my fury endlessly
upon the bodies in my path,
to leech the starshine from behind
their eyes and turn it against them.
They cannot touch me.

I have become addict,
can taste void incarnate in my teeth,
lick their sharpness towards the future.

I have become this without reasons.
I exist without a why.

5……

blurred….
there was
voices……
or bricks or pipes..
men dressed like demons
dressed like child
and they begat thorned children
begat horned insect and fire touches
them no more fire fire
fire no more
no more insect fire touching cloud men
and….i…had
a brother once I think
when i fell back to human had
brother who held me
when me
our mother died and we could
never save her could never be
where we were not
save her if i could save her
i would save her from fire
and fire at the men
who throw children like insects
break the walls of their bones
with my fists
my oh so small clenched
teeth fists the
bad men took her
my brother
held me down whispered
it would be alright….

dream he said
it was all dream here
i…i…who am i now….
who am i as everything clicks
into focus new eyes now
new eyes born from fire
no more fear fire and fists clench
and i….am dressed as child
the demons cloud sky through
killing children and their mothers
and and and and and and
there is a star…and everything is sharp focus
again
CLICK
star
CLICK
fire
CLICK
fists
CLICK
i….I….I see stars through my fingers.
As my brother rocks me, saying
we’re not alone.
We’re not alone.
We are not alone.

So we must be one with the stars.
And the Flowers.
And the Earth and I will never
die if I am one with these things.

Where have I become who am I here
I am here when he was how
could they take the she
and it will never happen again will it
they took the she
why…..

6-4

I am focused again.

The first hammer hit me on the shoulder.
I leapt over his flame breath, felt small while
not small, jumped high and so high
and he could only stare into what are now
unpitying eyes as I collapse the bridge and
sit watching him fall into the lava pit
and watch him crisp and melt and catch aflame
burn burn burn burn
he burned so burn….

I don’t bother opening the door behind me.

This is no longer that.

7-2

I cut through the sea.
I have become pale
and so righteous.

There are schools in session all around
and I grin grim rictal grins.
Fan fire underwater towards future
lessens pain and here I swim.
I used to hate the sea.
Before I became more myself.
A super I, I suppose.

The heavy salt water
cannot clean reams of native blood
now burned into my fingerprints
under nails
stained into teeth.

I who tear throats out.
I who burn thorned children.
I who crush the crusher.
I who have no name.

Still, at times, I remember a brother….
and a women with hair so corn silk pure
you could swear it was about to be spun
into gold, and the dark brick streets
under an honestly star studded sky
and underneath her
the red flowed so freely out
and over me as I held her
and I think I thought not again
as our hands clasped each other
with ring to match ring
and was pulled away
and no, brother. You’re wrong again.
I am alone.

I put flowers at her tombstone,
wanted to smash the monument of her leaving
with my fist, pull the native mushrooms from
her grave and grind them in my teeth
say that now they all are me and she is me again
I was so strong with her with me.
So I am twice alone
Who is left to guide me?

8-4

There are times when you can feel the ending.
At these times, you start to wonder if
after the ending occurs, you still exists. Afterwards,
that is. Or is all that you know just a play enacted
for some distant amusement.

I have lost track of time.
Half-heartedly I trudge through
another castle, lost but not really.
Voices, other voices, I can almost hear them direct me

“Up then down then down…”
“No, down, down, up, down…”
“What about going up and up, then down and down,
then left and….no…that is something else…Con….”

It no longer matters what it is
or what it was or what it could have been
or my place in all of it, if I ever had one.

I do not recall how I got here.
Vaguely do I remember the final leaps
through mallet and flame
and fierce, toothy malice to grab one last axe
watch the final burn one final time and know
that this one was the one.

I don’t know what is happening,
but I’m afraid to open the door.

Re: Aaron's Video Game Poetry Corner Hootenanny Thread

Post  JGH27 on Sat Sep 05, 2009 1:40 am

Something I wrote tonight after having the first verse stuck in my head for the past few days. I blame it on the "Solitude" poem and the Old Boy movie lol

Misery

Is all that I see
Really all that I’m meant to be?
Living this life of misery
I can’t help but wonder: is there no glee?

For when there is not another dawn
Does this mean the world has finally moved on?
When the children are done singing their song
Will everything have gone wrong?

As I choose to rest my head
Will I be fortunate to have a bed?
The papers headline read
How many more to end up dead?

I sit inside from the rain
Asking myself: Can I end this pain?
I’ve gone through this yet again
Or perhaps it’s just a trip down memory lane?

This has been a waste of a day
Or am I stuck seeing only in gray?
Once again caught in the fray
I ask: can all I do is pray?

Suddenly I begin to tear
Asking if this is what I fear?
Everything I held so dear
Am I really watching it all disappear?

Tonight the sky is clear for all to see
My friend may I ask you to come sit with me?
For now that we sit on the eve of victory
Can I tell you now of my misery?
