Fight sequences

Post  Phantom Sheep on Sun May 24, 2009 7:34 pm

I have to say, after the fight in Episode 4 I was a little worried, it seemed kind of sloppy and slow.... but the DK vs. Mario match was actually pretty badass!

I don't know what it was, but it seemed like a totally different style of shooting fights. I've done stage combat, but I don't know a thing about fighting for film. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Haha, we did what we could with Episode 4's fight, but to be perfectly honest... it was the first time I had ever filmed a fight scene before, and it just so happened to involve 7 characters at once, practically. Not an easy task, and while I agree it's by no means the best thing on the net, I'm not too unhappy with it considering the circumstances.

That being what it is, we learned a LOT from that shoot and applied it to this episode (and also discovered just how much easier it is with only 2 fighters). Still much to learn, but I'm glad it has your approval!

That's a fair point, I suppose a duel is a lot easier to co-ordinate and polish than... well, a brawl.

In any event, it was awesome. Very Happy Love the barrel.

It really was great to see a one-on-one. Mario vs. DK is a classic match! Especially with Pauline thrown in the middle of it.

Good point, plus she called him "Jumpman," completing the throwback.

As well as picking up a barrel and throwing it.

I'm pretty happy with the ep four fight scene. There are TV shows that do a LOT worse than we did with zero stunts doubles.

But yeah, Will (the fight choreographer), Kevin (the DP), and Matt (director/editor/sexypants) definitely learned from the first shoot, and it does show.

That's definitely true.

I guess it just seemed, to me personally, like it was a bit ad-hoc in the midst of highly polished production.

The ep was still wicked cool though, and now that the fights are totally new-and-improved, I've got no complaints.

It also helps when you know how to catch a barrel with your nose! I'm just saying it's great practice!

Yeah, the fight scene was executed better than the on in episode 4. I assume the hammer came out of the barrel, no? Oh, and will we see Squirtle again or is he dead?
