Re: Doctor Who

Post  TheTJ on Mon Sep 24, 2012 11:14 pm

Okay, here it is, my sort of review thingy for the new Who episodes.

1. Asylum of the Daleks.

Spoiler:
So, this one was the weakest unfortunately, and I had such high hopes for it. It was said that all the preexisting Daleks would make an appearance and technically they did, but in a dark dimly lit tunnel so it was nearly impossible to tell which daleks were which without knowing exactly what to look for.

Things Wrong:

There were three things I think were majorly wrong with this episode. The first was the fact that there was no peril. The Daleks weren't threatening anyone. We all knew the Doctor, Amy, and Rory would make it out alive because their departure is supposed to come at the fall series finale. And it's pretty obvious that the damsel in distress isn't what she seems, which the Doctor sorta figured out early. In short the only ones in the episode who weren't Daleks were the ones we knew would get away.

The second thing is the Ponds "Breaking Up". I don't know if they'll split up or die or what at the end, but I knew it wouldn't happen here. Sure enough, after some dramatic dialogue (Too dramatic in my opinion) they decide not to break up after all. Whee. And the whole thing stemmed from Amy not being able to have another baby. Rather than talk about it, they decide random divorce is clearly the best way to go. Then they do talk. Bleh. It just seemed like this episode wouldn't have any meat to it if they were getting along so they tacked the drama on and cheapened the characters a bit in my opinion.

And the last is the Doctor Being erased from the Daleks memory. This is just wrong. I'm willing to forgive it if it ties into the overall story. Like, they HAD to forget him in order for some huge event to take place. All I can say is that if it doesn't get reversed I shall be upset.

Also, the building shaped like a dalek was dumb. The Daleks think they're the best ever, but they're not really into the whole giant statues thing.

Things right:

Not a whole lot... The corpses growing those eye stalks was creepy and the feel of the planet was really good. Also the Doctor setting the Dalek into reverse and making it blow up the other daleks was a clever move. Some fun lines, but overall the episode was a smidgen too serious for me. Next episode did a lot better.

Other episode review type things coming later.

I saw this and I thought of you.

(Edit: I like how I completely neglected to mention that the 'you' specified was TJ, I just kind of assumed it was obvious.)

Whaa...? They picked the shortest scarf design, and cut the length in half...

Speaking of the scarf, I am nearing completion. It's at 16 or 17 feet, just a few more. Pics when done.

This is upsetting... I want to buy a radio control dalek, but apparently it's REALLY hard to find one they can ship to America. I couldn't even find it in regular Amazon, I had to go to Amazon.co.uk...

You make it sound like Amazon.co.uk is some sort of backwater deep web black market. But eh, welcome to the world of me shopping on Amazon! It's like a terrible game of Russian roulette; which part of my order will actually get shipped to me?

If you ever get stuck you can always ask me to order it then post it over to you.

Uhhhm.... New Tardis Interior

I have mixed feelings. I like the consol, and don't much care for the walls or floor. Just feels too COLD, you know? appropriate for Christmas though.

Dafuq

I mean

It looks cool, but like

Whyyyyyy

They kept the design for 9 and 10, why change it for 11 and then change it AGAIN? I mean... Asdghjkl

I miss tennant's interior, but I feel as though I haven't gotten to know this one yet.

And now it's gone.

Thanks for all the positive comments. Rest assured I'll be wearing the thing every day.

Now, for the Christmas episode... much less silly than I had feared, and the TARDIS didn't look too bad (Aside from the rust, but what can you do?) I will say Clara is extremely interesting. I wonder how she'll fit into the whole "Doctor WHO" thing.

The Doctor acting curmudgeonly is a bit forced, but it was needed for the story so I give that a pass. All in all, an ok story that got me much more excited for what's to come.

Oh dear lord that story.

Can I just say that I disliked the idea of changing the tardis interior so soon, but I really really like the new interior? :/

That said, this special.

Oh lord, this special.

I was entering it with a "how the hell are they going to explain how she looks identical to oswin the dalek girl?" mentality.

Halfway through, I said "Okay, so now she's going to die and her third incarnation will be the actual companion, and will look identical, have the same personality, and they won't explain why."

I am apparently halfway wrong on that account, but my mind is fucked.

god dammit moffat.

Re: Doctor Who

Post  TheTJ on Sun Dec 30, 2012 7:55 pm

So, in addition to reusing the "Great Intelligence" (From the 2nd Doctor's run) and the revamped cybermen we saw in the season 7 trailer there are two recurring monsters we haven't seen in 20 odd years.

First one is the Sea Devils, which are basically the Silurians, but in water (Seriously, they're a subspecies or something)

But bigger is... THE ICE WARRIORS!

I know the only time I've really talked about them on this site was to complain about the hissing, but that was mostly the quality of the sound. As a villain they're actually pretty interesting. Given what's been done with the Silurians I'm wondering if there's going to be a huge update on them, or if they'll be the same design, just done better. Like the Sontarans.

Also the Great Intelligence is probably showing up again to explain why it's timeline wasn't making much sense (while Snowman was taking place the G.I. was apparently supposed to be 160 years into a 200 year plan)

So yeah, good times ahead!

HAHA! YES! Charley's coming back! A Proper 5 Doctor Story! Wheeee!

I also heard about the Destiny of the Doctor series. Once a month starting now they're putting out an audio play focusing on one of the doctors. Each month a different Doctor will be covered. In September there should be a new audio play with Christopher Eccleston!

So much Doctor Who goodness this year I almost can't stand it! But I totally can.
