PSP 2: Now with touch controls...
... on the back of the handheld
I'm tired of everyone trying to copy Nintendo, but then doing something just for the heck of saying: Hey! Ours is different!

Oh wow, a system that copies the ideas of other companies, does a worse job of it, and will most likely have an inferior library.
...Well, that's Sony for you!

Re: PSP 2: Now with touch controls...
no... No.
How do you DO that?!?
Everyone half mocked the DS for meing touch controlled, but it worked. how the hell are they going to
(A) uses the touch screen capabilities?
On the DS, unless it was meant to be touch screen, (like TWEWY, or phantom hourglass/spirit tracks) It seemed like a cheap gimmick (like the poketch in D/P/Pt). Or a shortcut in some games, like easier access to the menu (which is just lazy).
(B) Justify the new game library?
The DS is now known to be the good handheld. It's relatively cheap, has both casual and hardcore games, and everyone knows it. Hell, I know people who bought the DS for nintendogs, and became die-hard nintendy fans because the fell in love with the DS. Adults have a DS. Children have a DS. The DS has tutoring games. The DS has books on it. (seriously. It's a cartridge with 100 classical books) The DS has cookbooks on it. How is the PSP2 gonna wedge itself into the niche market the DS has carved out for itself? It'll skim the surface, but always be forced out by the DS.
(C) Find people to make PSP touch games?, or people to buy them?
Self explanitory. Casual gaming companies are not going to want to put their stuff on a system that has a lot of darker stuff on it. Would you seriously see cooking mama on the same shelf as Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker? And the buyers...
I mean, pretend you're an overprotective parent. You know nothing about video games. you walk into a Gamestop, and see two displays. The Nintendo DS(current model X) and the PSP2. The DS has pictures of mario on it, and puzzle games, and brain age, and cooking mama, and flowers, and happy smiling rainbows. And the psp2 will have a display for... well, updated stuff on the current PSP. Like, God of War Portable. GTA portable. Twisted metal. Metal Gear Solid something or another. Which one are you going to buy for your child? (bear in mind, this is not ghetto mom, or "I don't give two shits, lets buy your thing and GTFO" mom. this is "I want the very best for my child" mom.) You would veer away from death, explosions, hookers and psychotic men with no shirts and large tattoos holding VERY large blades, and drift towards the happy sunshiny mushroom people with their puzzle professors in the weird hats and their cartoonish hero wearing tights while riding a train.

I have reached a level where I am not even disappointed in Sony anymore. They are really only a joke to me now.

Re: PSP 2: Now with touch controls...
If Sony was smart and wanted to do something Nintendo hasn't tried, then they should make their PSP have phone capabilities. You could argue that they'd then be copying Apple, but the iPhone is a phone first and a gaming platform second.
And in the event that there is mention of that, and I didn't see it, then derp.

Sony is too behind now.
3DS has touch screen and 3D. You would think Sony would grow a brain and know they got their asses handed to them in the handheld market and that they should back the fuck off.
Seriously, Sony, you are getting ridiculous. Innovate something yourself or get the fuck out.

Ngage failed as a gaming system, but the iPhone is starting to show us that it's not a bad idea after all, it just needs to be executed well.

Beat me to it.
Oh, it's been a while since I've got to witness a gaming device crash and burn. This should be interesting.

Re: PSP 2: Now with touch controls...
I'm actually kinda interested in what they plan to do with it. Touch controls on the back allow for a bigger viewing screen on the front. Control wise, however, you won't be able to do anything specific like touching a specific spot due to lack of seeing it, but it opens up otherwise unused fingers for gesture controls. Regardless, I'm not getting it, but I just don't think the system should be written off so quick due to fanboyisms, though I stand by what I said about the phone thing. NGage wasn't a brand that people really knew or bought into.
Sony has a lot of work to do with the PSP 2 if they want to gain ground on Nintendo, especially since impressions on the 3DS were pretty high coming out of E3. What also has to be considered is how Nintendo and Sony handle the online components. In this area, Sony right now arguably has better work in it, and Nintendo isn't exactly known for being masters in the online world and market. Personally, I don't think it will overtake the DS/3DS at all, but only time will tell.

Oow, I wasn't much into gaming during the (tragic?) crash of the dreamcast, so this'll be my first crashing gaming device

The PSP 2 or the N-Gage? 'Cause the N-Gage died around 2004.

A few places near me held midnight launches. Nobody showed up

I'm sure it was before 2004, because I'm positive it got ripped by Digitiser (God rest its haggered soul), and that was back when I was in grammar school...
