The Travel Thread

Post  ¿Señior Poopy Water? on Wed Nov 17, 2010 7:50 pm

So I was just in the Whatever Thread, and starting a new topic was suggested. I looked through and saw some Language and Culture threads, but I feel like this is different enough to constitute a new topic.

So where have you guys visited? What did you like/ dislike about wherever you went? Where would you like to go, what would you like to see?

My biggest dream is to move to Europe (or really anywhere but America), and I'd love to visit Germany and the Czech Republic, the settings of my favorite graphic novel.

I REALLY want to take a trip over to Europe as well. If not for possibly meeting up with Avalanche/Ansem or Raya. Then for the sights and kick ass accents. The other place I wish to go is Japan. Take a wild guess as to why that would be. Razz. And Canada is where I will hopefully be moving when I get older.

I went to Spain in the Summer of '09 with people from my high school. My Spanish teacher at the time wanted to organize a trip at the beginning of the school year, and 25 of us ended up going. 'Twas fun, I rode a lion we traveled to 6 or 7 cities, IIRC, though I can't remember the names of all them. We landed in Madrid after a layover in London, then went to Sevilla, then Granada, Costa del Sol, Valencia, and finished off in Barcelona. Spent two nights in Madrid, Costa del Sol, and Barcelona, and one in the others.

The main attractions that we visited were the cathedrals and the architecture of them as well as other buildings. We also got to tour the Real Madrid futbol stadium, among other things. Shops were fun to look at, especially in Barcelona where there's a bunch of shops with immigrants that speak 6 languages with stuff to sell. Costa del Sol and Barcelona were probably the most fun cities just because there we had fun hanging out when we weren't touring. The hotel at Costa wasn't crap (expect little from them if you visit), and being on the beach at night in Barcelona was fun. Our tour leader was a young woman from Australia and she was awesome.

Aside, from the cultural heritage and the language barrier (which I kinda say loosely given that I live in California), it didn't seem that different from some of the cities in California. Barcelona was memorable given that it had a lot more to offer than just more cathedrals. I just don't really have the desire to go visit Europe again, except maybe the Netherlands. It was a lot of fun to visit, but it didn't seem that amazing to make me think about ever living there permanently. If I had the choice, I'd want to hit up Australia and New Zealand next, or Japan, for different reasons.

Honestly, I think I'd like to settle down when I'm older back in the city I grew up with. It treated me right. Safe town, high school does well at preparing students, and it's close to family. If not that, then the town I'm currently in, because the city feel like where I grew up, and it's just closer to the beach. The only downside is being in a bankrupt state where it can be expensive to live in. Despite that, it's beautiful here and I love it. Doubt I'll be able to do that though, as I'll end up having to move to wherever any future jobs I apply for need me.

I went all over Europe when I was younger (we went to England, France, Belgian, and some other places I can't remember). I miss it dearly, It's similar to America, just a better America. I don't want to stay in this country because It's to capitalist for my tastes, I'm a big fan of socialism and the general values of European countries.

I'd absolutely love to go to New Zealand, that place looks so bomb. I'd be great to take like a month off and visit Australia for two weeks and the go to New Zealand for two. Japan would be great, I'm a big weeaboo so I'd totally freak out if I went. But I'd rather go to anywhere in Europe. Finland Interests me the most, but because their weather is similar to Alaska I don't know If I could live there.

And I would go with the opposite for just the opposite reasons too. :3 I love this country for it's capitalism and I'm not a fan of Socialism.

as european myself I have been in a pityable amount of european countries myself, ussually staying in the comfort of Holland. Went to Belgium a few times, Germany and France. France I kinda like the mediterean......just a pity thats where the french live.

I plan on going to Norway this summer if I manage to get the money. Or Italy if my friends intend to see their plans trough. America.......doesn't really interest me to be honest, aside from the possibility to meet lots of people. I kinda imagine the places there being huge european cities, only smellier and with greasier food Razz

Ive talked with most of the exchange students that have attend my High school. Most of them love america, There's a lot more culture here then people give it credit for. Every single one I talked to (all 5 of them :p) said America far exceeded their expectations. It's really worth visiting, and theres so much to see and do, going from one state to another is equivalent from going to one country to another in europe (literally in distance, I mean France is like 3 times smaller then Texas)

Also: Food depends on where you go to eat, and europe smells worse, all of europe... asia too.

Let's see, I've been to: the USA (but I was 4, so I barely remember it), Hong Kong (at 5, again, barely remember it), went to New Zealand when I was I think 11 or 12, and at the start of this year I went over to Egypt, Turkey and Greece.
Turkey was amazing, I'd so go back there. Greece was...a lot less interesting than I thought it would be (though the Parthenon was awesome) and Egypt...has bad memories for me.
But yeah, I'm not as well travelled as some people I know but I'm only 19, and there's a lot of places I want to go. Like the UK, for instance.
And I've only ever seen the east coast of Australia, despite having lived here all my life. Razz

I've never left the US. Yet. I want to visit Russia one day, of only to make three years of Russian meaningful. I'm also looking into studying abroad for College, though I'm not sure if that would work out for me... Still, I'd love to study in Europe, or even Australia, or Canada, just anywhere to get me out of the US for a few years to give me a little change in perspective.

Yaknow, minby, you could always go on the exchange program...

As for me, I'm very poorly traveled, even in the US. I've visited within my state, vermont, massachutets, (?) And pennsylvania.

Re: The Travel Thread

Post  Perry on Thu Nov 18, 2010 4:18 am

I haven't made much travel for myself to be honest.
Just went along with my parents till i was around 16, and with that I've been to germany, belgium, france and italy plenty of times and seen pretty every bloody church there were in those countries. That kindof set the tone for Europe for me, where christianity ruled your socks of and killed any attempt at having an original culture.
Now there are differences in society culture, but that has so far only made people be more assholish than here in the netherlands Razz

For the rest I've been to Austria and England to meet up with people I knew through the internet (and my girlfriend), Also funny how the person I met in Austria moved to england, so I guess I'll be visiting england alot now.

I like the UK as a country. It's like an anti-france. The lands look alot like it, but the weather and the people and the food and everything is just like "Fuck you france!".
The weather is grey and timid, lots of rain. The people are nice but no one living in the UK would say the same. and the food is kindof bland and needs lots of salt.

Places I still want to go would be... Any-fucking-where-outside-western-fucking-europe. I've seriously had it with the christian based culture everywhere and it's pretentiious farce. If you just go 1 more country to the east, shit is already so much different. Switzerland is also a boss, for always standing on it's own.
I want to see Scandinavia, switzerland, greece, croatia, russia, china, Tibet, Japan, indonesia, australia, new zealand and the USA.
I'm not a fan of warm or dry climates though, so for that reason africa, the middle east and south america aren't on my list.

And I agree with SWP, the USA culture would be very interesting as a tourist XD. Things are done so much different there, and everything is somehow so much larger....even the people! Very Happy in a... not healthy way.

Aye same here, that huge chunk of desert in the middle may as well be an ocean though, just as much of a pain to cross really.

Only ever been to Mexico to visit my family, with a stop in Vancouver and then going down to Seattle to visit an uncle. Was only about 7 so while the memories are there they're sort of hazy. Hardly remeber Canada/America really, Mexico was nice though. Good food, really good food and it is nice to actually have some family around, even if they amount there is pretty huge.

I know, right? I doubt Perth and Adelaide are that exciting anyway.

I'm so jealous of you Europeans. You can go to another country easily because you're all so close. The nearest country to me is New Zealand and that's a four hour flight.

Yeah I mean there's some nice natural landscapes over the western side but that's about it really. And it is way too damn hot from what I hear, like seriously terrible.

Isn't Bali closer, both pretty similar either way. But yeah it's quite a flight to get to just about anywhere else really.

I'm not much of a traveler myself. I've only been to Greece once and to Sweden twice. But I'd like to do a lot more travelling.
I'm planning on going on a longer trip of some sort after I get out of gymnasium(May 2011). Even a trip to somewhere else in Europe would probably be nice and my wallet would actually survive that.
I would really like to visit the US, Australia or Japan someday, though.

That's because we are countries. You guys (australia and the US) are flipping continents.
If you guys would've just split up the land instead of uniting everything and become one bigass country, you'd deal with stuff the same way.

If every US-state was it's own country, there'd be alot more cultural differences. Same for Australia if it'd split up. But thats what you get from being build up by immigrants. Razz

Australia is really just one significantly smaller country spread out around the edges (and mostly the east coast really). The middle is pretty much all empty desert, there isn't really enough good inhabitable land to split up into more countries.

I would love to go to Ireland. I've heard wondrous things about it from friends who have been there and they said, "you would love it." *Envy* I'd also want to go to England and Sweden, but that's it as far as Europe goes.

I REALLY want to go to Japan. Not to live, but to visit. Or maybe my future job of choice may take me there, but I'd love to see it.

What's your guy's favorite mode of transportation?

I took a cruise to the Bahamas, and that was probably the best thing I've ever done. Floating hotel with a boatload of food. (Also, the Bahamas was so dope, warmest beaches Ive ever been to)
