Dark Before The Dawn- setup thread

Post  Raya on Tue Dec 07, 2010 12:48 pm

After batting around some ideas, and seeing as there's demand for it, Ansem and I have decided to start up a new forum RP Very Happy

-------------------

A parallel dimension, an alternate timeline, a world created by the hopes and dreams of our own. Call it what you will. Dragnia is a world of magic, of monsters, of various different races and NPCs that say the same thing over and over. It's a stereotypical JRPG world where empires are toppled, heroes rise, legends are named and the western box art is shit.

The world is divided into the Northlands and Southlands, kept separate by an impassable mountain range. The Northlands consist of numerous city states, home of all the different races. The city states have lived in relative peace for years. Originally it started out as a tale- a mysterious army had assembled in the remote Southlands and was taking it over. Not that it mattered- the Southlands were far away and it was no cause for concern. Next came a few refugees, seeking asylum from the advancing hordes. That wasn't important either. New workers were always appreciated. And this force was still too far away to worry about...

...until it marched forward across the mountain border and began to cut a swath through the Northlands. The army itself was a mystery- no one knew of its name, its leaders or its purpose. The soldiers all wore black, their banners bearing the emblem of a black dragon breathing blood red flame. The soldiers themselves were of various races and each a silent fighter, not making a sound even if they were seriously wounded and fighting to the death. Whatever resistance they met was crushed as they continued their march towards the cities in an unstoppable black tide. By now several capitals are razed or under siege. Once they fall, the rest of the world will follow.

The token resistance, in despair at the futility of their efforts, have instead placed their faith in an old prophecy (as always). Beings from another world will descend to help save their own and foil the Nameless Army's aims...whatever they may be. In their impatience of bringing about this new dawn they have decided to hurry up the process and summon up these beings, but they're not your average warriors...

They're the members of the TWBB forum.

----------------

Yes, in this game, the characters you play are yourselves. Like it or not you're the heavenly warriors spoken of in prophecy and have been summoned into Dragnia to save it. The summoning has better adapted you to this world, so your abilities and appearance are whatever you personally feel you would be in an RPG- a mage, a swordfighter, even a different race such as a dwarf or a moogle if you want. Anything that's been in an RPG before is fair game, within reason.

You've got free range with your abilities, as long as they're not too broken. For instance, with magic perhaps you focus on one particular element, or on status effects, illusions or healing. Just remember you're the equivalent of level 1 at the start, so you're not going to be *that* powerful from the onset! Try to keep in mind how characters from RPGs work and base it along those lines.

The theme of the game is comedy-drama. It's funny because all the RPG clichés- fitting 99 of each item in your pocket, stabbing someone makes a number appear above them, squinting hard enough lets you see other people's stats etc- are all there for you to parody and take the piss out of. The drama is because essentially you're just youths with powers you can't control and a destiny you never wanted in the first place. The fate of an entire world is resting on your shoulders...how can you ever hope to become the heroes the legends speak of?

In typical RPG style you've got evil empires, heroic sacrifices, boss fights and epic emotional moments. Will you save the world or die trying? Can you ever be the new dawn that will stop the black tide engulfing the world? And will that rare item ever bloody drop?

-----------

Depending on how many people sign up we may limit the number of the players. They'll be chosen based on their character descriptions, which should be done as so:

Name: (duh)

Race: (if you're no longer human, describe your new race and if possible post a link/picture!)

Appearance: (physical appearance and clothes. You get a wardrobe of your choice)

Preferred weapon: (you'll automatically be proficient in a type of weapon, such as swords, bows etc. Take your pick. You won't start off with a weapon, of course. You'll acquire one as the story progresses)

Abilities: (what you can do at present, what you'll eventually be able to do once you become powerful enough)

Personality: (we know what you're like, but clarify it a little)

Misc: (anything that doesn't fit in the other categories, such as secret goals, other skills, points of weakness etc)

The Story Thus Far:
Spoiler:
After being snatched from their own world the members of the TWBB forum find themselves trapped in the fantasy world of Dragnia. Taken to the city of Wyndia they learn their purpose- they've been summoned to this world to fulfil a prophecy and save it from the unstoppable, devestating force of the Nameless Army.

Escorted by their two guardians, Vandir and Meneon, the party head towards the border of Highland with the intention of reinforcing the Highland Army that's marching south to liberate Worent. On the way they are betrayed by Meneon and in the melee Spont is killed. After defeating Meneon and the soldiers the battered party manage to reach the Highland Army. The Highlanders intend to liberate a camp on Worent's borders and the members are the scouting force. Using trickery and brute strength they seize the camp, also liberating the captive Omicron and Camilla in the process.

Their victory is short lived as the main force of the Army arrived, lead by non other than Victor, first of the great Generals. The members are forced to flee, leaving behind Vandir and the Highlanders to hold back the Army for as long as possible. After setting up temporary camp (and getting shot by arrows) the party reached the capital of Leknaat.

Discovering that the city is an extremely devout and militant place with much suspicion of the non-human races, the party split up. Adventures include going on a side quest, getting to know the locals and falling down some stairs.

After getting their request for help thrown out by the Ruling Council the party reconvene at an inn. Much stripping is had. The party is interrupted by troops sent by the Hierophant to kill them. In the resulting combat TJ is killed and the party decided to stop the Hierophant's web of corruption once and for all. Camilla, Snake, Weldar and Requiem break into his mansion, but are discovered and a boss fight breaks out.

The Hierophant turns out to be none other than Quaetam himself. Back in his mansion Quaetam explains how he came to be in his position. The party are in two minds whether to trust this former enemy or not, when Weldar dies of his injuries sustained in the fight. The fallout is unpleasant. As the party try and deal with the death of Weldar (and Q with the knowledge that he killed his friend) Perry storms off and is kidnapped by Ashvald's men. The members, with Q, gatecrash Ashvald's hedonistic party in order to save him. After some investigations they infiltrate an underground cavern where they find the source of Ashvald's power: the demon Shu'Sharradin, who can fortell the future. During the confrontation Fed gains a mental connection with Spont, who is now in the daemonic realms, and Avalanche and Sahrimnir blow up Shu'Sharradin with their Holy Lazor, the exploded essence triggering a terrible vision of the future in them all.

After leaving the city, now with Quaetam in the party, everyone heads south towards Mousillon. After making camp an elf rogue steals their things and Perry goes through this Trial. Perry confronts the darkness inside himself and triumphs, gaining, ahem, 'Super Hearing' as his Gift. Meanwhile the party catch the elf, who is revealed to be Relmitos. His story unfolds and tomorrow...fun times will occur.

City State Information
Spoiler:
Wyndia
Major races: Wyndian (winged-folk), Human
Rulers: King of Wyndia, Princess Nina
Major NPCs: Vandir (Captain of the Guard), Larissa (member of the High Council)
A peaceful nation of scholars and sorcerers, it was the Wyndian High Council who decided to summon up the members of the forum to fulfil the prophecy and save the world. The city state is not martially powerful due to its peacful nature, although they have many mages at their disposal. Wyndia is closely allied with Highland, but due to its location rarely deals with the other city states.

Highland
Major races: Human, Dwarves
Rulers: ???
Major NPCs: Moredain (General of the Dwarf Forces- deceased), Dartyk (General of the Human Forces- deceased)
A mountainous region ruled by an alliance of humans and dwarves. A tough, industrious nation of strong warriors and Wyndia's greatest ally.

Leknaat
Major races: Human
Rulers: The Ruling Council: Reginald Ashvald (High Justice), Archbishop Leona Mandiku (High Priestess), Claudius Marcellus (Leader of the Templars), Aelric Ezuriel (Emperor)
Major NPCs: The Hierophant (Claudius' right-hand man, manipulator and all round devious bastard), Oscar (orphan helped by Avalanche and Sahrimnir), Damian (ghost of a former rebel, currently bothering Requiem), Ryran (Captain of the Guard, runs the prison and works for the Hierophant)
A devoutly religious city state dedicated to the worship of L'Ohora, the goddess of life. Their Holy Orders of paladins are powerful, but they shun the non-humanfolk.

Canis
Major races: Kobolds (dog-folk)
Rulers: ???
Major NPCs: ???
Land of the kobolds. Garrulous and friendly, what they lack in physical strength they make up for in bravery and shrewdness.

Treyfeld
Major races: A mixture of many different races
Rulers: ???
Major NPCs: ???
The great grasslands, home of countless nomadic tribes that hunt the great beasts there. Immensely territorial and with customs that sound bizarre to our cultured ears.

Worent
Major races: Worens (cat-folk)
Rulers: ???
Major NPCs: ???
Home of the proud warrior catfolk, the Worens. A once green and pleasant land, from reports it is the latest to fall to the Army. Who knows the fate of its people?

Mousillon
Major races: Previously human, now likely undead/monsters
Rulers: ???
Major NPCs: ???
The cursed province. Already a city state of ill-repute, it was the first to be savaged by the Army. Now all manner of monsters and undead openly stalk a land that hasn't felt the sun's touch for many months.

Sylvania
Major races: The Fae (elves, beastmen, fauns, faeries, dryads etc)
Rulers: ???
Major NPCs: ???
Home to the elves and other fae creatures. They are extremely xenophobic and refuse to deal with the other races. It is unknown what lies beyond their borders; the fae guard their secrets jealously.

The Nameless Army
Spoiler:
The High Commander
From head to foot he was clad in impenetrable obsidian armour, the ornate patterns and designs hurting the eye that looked upon it. Gauntleted hands, tipped with razor talons, curled obscenely around the arm rests of his decadent throne. His skull was encased by an immense helmet, drawn into an elongated visage reminiscent of draconic head, two spiralling horns acting as a counterbalance. His very aura reeked of malevolence, his frame seemingly devouring the light around him.
The High Commander is the undisputed tyrant of the Nameless Army, ruling his countless legions with an iron fist. Though supreme in combat he rarely finds the need to draw his sword; his aura of menace and power is enough to break weaker mortals. Yet his past and goals are a mystery. In a blink of an eye he managed to subjugate the Southlands and now he sends his troops northwards- but not on a mission of conquest. He's searching for something and his loyal Generals will stop at nothing to fulfil his desire. The consequences for failing him are dire indeed...

Victor
The first was a dignified man, perhaps in his forties, the first streaks of grey appearing in his neat, ordered hair. He had the aura of a commander, a dangerous fighter who brook no weakness from himself or others, one who demanded total obedience.
Victor is the first and greatest of the Army's Generals, veteran of many campaigns and the High Commander's most loyal servant. Armed with a broadsword he's unparalleled in combat, having personally slaughtered his way through thousands to achieve his master's goals. Though merciless he still retains his honour as a soldier and serves the High Commander with unshakable loyalty. And woe betide those that stand against his master...

Dunya
The second was a stunning woman, her long golden tresses cascading down her voluptuous frame. What little armour she wore served only to accentuate and highlight her ample curves. Yet her beauty was marred by the undeniable hard lines of cruelty etched into every angle of her face.
Dunya was once a faithful priestess, serving the deities of Death and Destruction. Yet her thirst for power was not so easily slaked, and when the Army began their Northwards march she turned to the High Commander. Through her wits and sheer cruelty she quickly rose through the ranks, soon becoming one of the Generals. She thrives on pain and suffering, using her looks, sharp tongue and deady magic to get what she desires. For those that displease her...what becomes of them is best left unsaid.

Nimisch
The third was a hulking demon, standing head and shoulders above the rest. His powerful frame was encased in massive full plate armour, thick muscles bunching like cords of rope beneath his scaled skin. Wisps of sulphur poured from his jaws as he stamped and pawed the ground in murderous frustration.
Born in the Void as a lowly imp, Nimisch started at the bottom of the food chain for demons. But through tenacity and cunning he survived, growing stronger and stronger as he devoured his superiors and clawed his way to the top. His intelligence may be low and animalistic, but his savagery and strength are unnmatched. The High Commander saw what he was: a Beast. But that's exactly what he wanted...

Ernstrad
The fourth was a wizened man, body warped from decades of abusing the darkest arts, leaning heavily on his decorated staff. And yet he moved with an unnatural vigour, a grace no man of his stature should have ever possessed. His eyes glittered with ferocious deviance, a smug half-smile tugging his thin lips.
Ernstrad's past is an enigma, what stories he shares seemingly being full of paradoxes and half-truths. Perhaps the full truth is too much for even the other Generals to bear. But what is known is that he is an unparalleled fleshcrafter, moulding living tissue as though it were clay. Through the Dark Arts and his devilish mind he's created untold horrors to unleash upon the Army's enemies and- even worse- for his own curiosity and amusement. Not even the dead are safe from his machinations. After all, it will all serve a purpose somehow...

Post  Ansem on Tue Dec 07, 2010 1:27 pm

Name: Ansem.

Race: Human ofcourse.

Appearance: Simple Black robes with a Black tabard and a broad hood, broad enough to cover my face in shadows.

Preferred weapon: quarter staff and a claw.

Abilities: Necromantic Abilities and spells. Starting of with simple attack and healing spells, Doombolt, Leech Life, a simple heal (defy death, oh yeah!). The Undead resurrection thing comes later, but i want my own little army ofcourse!

Personality: I am me of course. Good at heart, but i like a challenge, and give me the opportunity and i will seize more power and fame. Because in the end, it all comes down to: What gets the most chicks. A good face is 1 thing, but chicks dig power, ya know? Get the knowledge, get the power, get the ancient artifacts, get the fame, get the girls. I wanna be set for life, in a nice castle with a small army of servants/slaves and ofcourse, my Harem, and my undead soldiers. Fuck holy stuff.

Misc: Weakness? Female beauty ofcourse, derp. That, and swords to the face. Shit hurts, you know?

Re: Dark Before The Dawn- setup thread

Post  Requiem on Tue Dec 07, 2010 2:46 pm

Name: Requiem Dominus Mortalis

Race: Demi-Wraith

Appearance:
Black hair with silver tips about shoulder length. Six foot tall. 220 lbs. Black eyes (No Iris). Pale skin with almost a smoky coloring, toned. He has small fangs.

Black and silver coloration in clothing. Several silver rings. He dresses much like an old cowboy in design. A long black trench coat, with a black shirt underneath. His pants are also black with a silver cross on the outside seam near the bottom. He generally just wears a pair of black leather engineer boots with a silver design of an eye with a gothic cross centered in the pupil. The design is also on the back of his trench coat. He has a black cowboy hat with a thin silver band around it. Lastly, when not armed with his gauntlets, he wears black leather fingerless gloves with silver flames running up from the wrist. The eye design is the same as the one that I showed in the help thing I asked for earlier, but for those who don't wish to look it up
Spoiler:

Preferred weapon: Gauntlets (Bladed)
Spoiler:

Abilities:
Soul Absorption: Take the battle experiences of any defeated enemy, occurs during Soul Drain.
Fire: Gained through TheTJ's Death, can throw/shoot fireballs out of his gauntlet, may be able to do more as he practices. All magick depletes his lifeforce until he passes out/dies.
Illusion: Gained through Weldar's Death, can create illusions of himself up to four

Learnable: Martial Arts, Weapon Styles, Poison Skills

Personality: Chaotic Good, easy going for the most part, but he cannot stand uptight people, and he won't tolerate being ordered about. Aside from that, he gets along with almost everybody, but has issues making friends. When it comes to battle though, he fights with cold determination. He has no compassion for his enemies, but he will not attack an opponent who cannot defend themselves. He will either arm them, or if they are too weak to fight back at all, drain them.

Misc: Carries a deck of cards on him at all times. Grew up abused most of his life, and doesn't talk much of his past unless he's asked. Always tells the truth unless it's absolutely necessary that he lie. He wants to forget his past, so he focuses on drinking and gambling

Somebody's gotta have the troubled non-human

Post  Sahrimnir on Tue Dec 07, 2010 2:59 pm

Name: Karl-Kristoffer Johnsson / Sahrimnir / KK

Race: Mostly human, part angel. I have the wings of an angel and weak holy powers.

Appearance: Shining white armor covering everything up to my neck (paladins don't need helmets), dark hair, brown eyes, white feathery wings.

Preferred weapon: Sword. I've practised fencing for three years (rapier), but RPGs never differentiate between wielding different types of swords, so I can use anything from a broadsword to a katana. I'll use them all the same way though.

Abilities: Starting out with simple healing powers and offensive light magic (super effective against the undead). These will evolve, so that I can heal more serious wounds and use more powerful light magic attacks.

Personality: Lawful good. Very compassionate (whenever someone is in trouble, I have to help them). Kind (I am practically incapable of being mean). Honest (I'll lie if I have to, but it will take a lot). Hopeless romantic. Idealist. Optimist.

Misc: Teetotaller. Afraid of heights. Have got five voices in my head representing different parts of me.
Justice
Prudence/Self-preservation
Compassion/Mercy
Curiosity
Fun

Say Reqiuem, I have a question, Why take a weird semi wraith soul sucking char? Just curiosity.
That and you play yourself. You being transported and transformed into this world. And while you can change races in this transformation, you cant really change who you are. So becoming the son of the Wraith king is a bit far fetched. Maybe it's an idea to alter it a bit, maybe try to become a wraith instead of being one already. After all, you even wraiths have to begin somewhere right?

And DRTJR, whats your char's name? Just DRTJR?

And people, we're going to set a limit, we dont know the limit yet, but if you want in, go ahead and create your char. Me and Raya will check em all, and give some tips here and there. If it's total rubbish and you dont wish to alter it, we can exclude you, but we do not want to do that. We just want to create a fun game for everyone.

Not getting home until 9, so here's a basic, non-official bio. I may change things between now and when I get home, but...

I've got sheild and lightning powers. Lvl 1 I have the ability to make a basic sheild for a short period, send a current through my vody, (will act lilke electrricity ans flow through metal, water, etc) and hurl a small spear of lightning. May seem OP? But I'n working with the power usage = ezhaustion thing. Sheild lasts 15 seconds max right now- as I level, sheild gets stronger, time grows longer, manipulation. Of the sheild... Later levels include upgrades to attaxcks. But I start with the sheilds...

Weapons are a quarterstaff with a blade on one end, and a .22 calibur rifleslung diagonally across the back, staff over one shoulder and gun over the other. May lead to lines like
"Why the fuck is a goblin with a spear carrying a box of bullets? Are bullets even invented yet? Can someone explain this? Why do they drop random things?"

I edited the profile, most of what I had was just copy and paste from a tournement thing I did a while back. Anything else I have is just slight exaggeration of myself or racial shifts. The soul sucking thing is mostly for fun, and because I'm too lazy to come up with real powers at the moment. Seriously though, it's mostly just carry over from a tournement where I decided it would be beneficial to be able to take the powers of the defeated to use further on in the tournement.

yeah, but do you see what the main part of this RPG is? You play yourself, altered here and there to fit in a western RPG world. Different race, ok. Awesome powers, be my guest. But you need something to strife to. I could very well say that i come to this world as a Nephilim, a Fallen Angel, enriched with Dark magic and an Undead horde awaiting my command, but where's the fun? Where's the growth? Troubled non human? Great idea, love it! But perhaps you should broaden your playing style, take something you've never played before! I constantly play bad guys, im the bad guy GM even, but in the latest LARP ive joined, im a goody 2 shoes healer.

Im not saying you should abandon this char, or play something thats new and weird for you. Im only suggesting you take a while and figure what would be cool in this setting. Just remember 2 things: You are yourself, you're lvl 1. And that goes for everyone still wanting to make a char.

Well, overall I'm good with this character (Not good as in capable, good as in I like it)
As for a goal... I dunno, I'm not a goal setting kind of guy. I'm a knowledge seeker, a psychoanalyst(Non-professional), but short of that, I prefer to kick back, relax and play cards. Or Fight. I like fighting too. I usually don't play as myself fully because in all honesty? I'm boring as a jar of dirt. I riddle, I rhyme, I write, I fight, I gamble, I sing(On occasion), and I don't get out much because nobody wants anything to do with me. My bio I have is simply a slight alteration/exaggeration of me.
Hm... I dunno... I'll try to come up with a true goal...

I'm up for joining this, but I dunno if I have time given everything else (GB, my two hacks which will resume when Game 10 ends, etc). I'll decide by tomorrow.

Question about the personality. Is it based on the forums or out side the forums? As While I may be energetic and talkative here outside the forum in real life that is the polar opposite of me. As I am a calm thinker, quiet, And pretty much summed up as a loner. Or does it really matter?

Post  Minby_Aran on Tue Dec 07, 2010 4:54 pm

I got dropped for the Grand Brawl, I will be PISSED if I get dropped here too.
Anyway, my character.

Name: Minby_Aran (The underscore is silent)

Race: Just a plain old boring human

Appearance: Average height, about 5'5", skinny, 120 lbs. Longish, brown, flowing hair. Kinda muscular.

Clothing: A black track jacket with gold trim (presumably with a matching tee shirt underneath), a black headband, and sexy short shorts.

Preferred weapon: Side armed cutlasses, similar to Vyse from Skies of Arcadia. Can be used as normal swords if needed, but usually are held parallel to the arm.

Abilities: Speed. Pretty much just speed. Minby is really fast, and though he can't hit hard, he can hit a lot in a short amount of time to make up for it. He also uses physics, so that makes him more powerful, right?

Personality: Generally cheerful, but more calm. Can stare a Shoggoth in the eyes without expression, but when someone he cares about is in danger, he gets angry, and no one is happy when Minby is angry.

Misc: Seriously Lawful Neutral. Follows a strict code of personal laws, and tries to follow the local ones, but has no problem shrugging them off to follow his own rules. Also, as mentioned in the abilities section, he knows physics. Not just basic stuff either, really weird pseudo physics. Maybe just played so many RPGs that he learned the game physics like that.

Post  ¿Señior Poopy Water? on Tue Dec 07, 2010 5:04 pm

Name: Senior Poopy Water

Race: Horse/Centaur

Appearance: Average Clydesdale Horse

Preferred weapon: Hooves, spears.

Abilities: Can stomp once for no, twice for yes. Can carry heavy loads. Can run fast. Can talk to other horses. And when his life (or an allies life) is threatened he can transform into a centaur.

Personality: As a human SPW was a suave liberal. While also an incredible pessimist. Now, as a horse, not much has changed. Although he is much, much angrier.

Misc: SPW was sitting at home checking the forums when he heard an ominous voice. "Young SPW, the prophesy is being fulfilled. From this day forth you shall be known as the Horsemaster." "Badass!" SPW though, but he had no idea what was truly in store for him.

Edit:
Some stuff I've seen other people's posts.

Eventually learns: Manual transformation b/w horse and centaur. Talking to other species of animals. Other fun nature-y stuff like tracking and talking to trees and junk like that. Maybe get an awesome familiar.

Goal: Finish his mission, return to earth, and get his old body back. That's all he really wants.

Spw seems like the most intrresting character so far. Oh, the staff with a blade I have? The blade can pop out, rEvealing both a handle on said blade, and a second blade inside it. If anyone asks how it's possible to store two blades inside a staff, TD will shrug and say it's a staff he got in a trade from some dude wirh a scarf.
(Obvious reference is obvious)

I've participated where it is currently canon to have a man named TD260 running around. It's gotten to the point where I'm so comfortable talking about the character, I've had to rewrite GB posts because I wrote TD every time I said keith. We also have a horse named senor poopy water. I don't think someone named suicide angel is gonna look out of place.
