In which we discuss the hypnotic one-eyed pagan god of your living room

Post  Spontaneous Combustion on Thu Jan 06, 2011 3:20 pm

If it wasn't obvious from the thread title, this is where we discuss television, recommend our favorite shows to other people and bash reality shows and stupid shitty American remakes. In this thread we will also face the fact that MacGyver was and always will be the best goddamn show in human history.

Commence discussion.

Regardless of the intent of the thread, which is for television. Can we please decrease the length of the thread name?

Favorite Shows

Frasier
House
Bones
Monk
The Office
American Pickers

For some odd reason no more shows come to mind.

I don't watch too much TV, but one of my absolute favourite shows ever is Being Human. It started out as a single pilot episode on BBC3 but got such an overwhelming response (I was one of the people who emailed in, whee) that they made an entire series. That proved so popular they made a second, and the third is coming out very soon I love you

It's a drama-comedy series based around three main characters. Mitchell is a ladies man that happens to be a 116 year old vampire, who in this universe are pretty much drug addicts for blood. George is a shy, mild-mannered geek who's a werewolf, forced every full moon to go through hell. In an attempt to get some normality in their lives they rent a house together, only to discover it's haunted by Annie, a ghost obsessed with making cups of tea who isn't sure why she's still here. The series is based around the three trying to deal with their fucked up conditions and the effects it has on the people around them. As much as they wish to pretend to be normal, they're no longer human and there's plenty of things out there that want to remind them of that...

Seriously, it's the best thing on TV. It's dark, horrific and funny at the same time (such as everyone confronting Mitchell about never doing the dishes or shy George buying a BDSM cage to contain himself during his time of the month) and you genuinely care about the characters. Plus it has a little old lady vampire who claims she slept with Hitler. Marvellous.

It's also getting an American remake, which is due to air this month. WHY, WHAT IS THE POINT OF REMAKING IT IT WILL BE AWFUL WITH BOOBS EVERYWHERE AND AAAAARGH

Ahem. Fangirling aside, here's the official homepage. Try and see some of the episodes on iplayer, you won't regret it.

I really don't watch much TV. Not since high school. I will turn it on while doing homework cause it actually helps me, believe it or not, and I usually default to Fox.

Edit: Long thread title is best title.

Being Human is something I've wanted to watch too.

My family watches Modern Family. WHYYYYYYY ;_;

I also recently purchased Whose Line Is It Anyway (Series 1). A rare case where tbh, I actually like the American version more than the British one.
And from Australia we have the Chaser team, o'course. I bought all their election specials on DVD because I am plainly a huge nerd.

Oh Gawd, Primeval. I wanted to like it, I really did, but it turned into the television equivalent of cutting myself. It had a fantastic idea behind it, obscure awesome prehistoric creatures like Gorgonopsids and Nigel Marvin being eaten by a dinosaur, but the palaeontological fail proved too much. Scorpions the size of buses, birds without feathers, flying lizards, marine crocodiles with flippers, GIANT EXPLODING PRECAMBRIAN WORMS.

At least the future predator and James Lester were brilliant...

Re: In which we discuss the hypnotic one-eyed pagan god of your living room

Post  Spontaneous Combustion on Fri Jan 07, 2011 3:59 pm

Okay, I'll list some of my favorites. I'll be leaving out anime and shows I watched as a kid since we probably have had multiple threads about both.

Firstly, Joss Whedon. This guy is sort of an underappreciated genius these days because everything else except Buffy the Vampire Slayer has died out in a few seasons. Firefly got pretty much the worst treatment and didn't even make it through the first season.
Oddly enough, I think Firefly is Whedon's best work in every way. Every character is incredibly well written, funny and likable, the themes and stories are deep and entertaining and there's not a single bad episode in the half-season it got. Luckily most of the loose ends in the show were tied up in the movie adaptation, Serenity.
I also recommend Serenity very much, except that...well, not all of the characters you loved in the show might make it out alive.
Joss Whedon is, how you say, "kind of an asshole" like that.

Also, Doctor Who(the newer one). It's silly and it's campy, but luckily it doesn't take itself very seriously. However, when it does, the plots are amazing(see: Blink). With Steven Moffatt in command, promise of not rehashing classic villains and an upcoming episode by Neil frickin' Gaiman, series 6 has to be pure awesome.

Edgar Wright's "Spaced"(before Scott Pilgrim, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead) is probably my favorite comedy of all time. Too bad it's only sixteen episodes, but I love them all.
Here's a clip. Now go buy the entire series box set online.

I also absolutely loved Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes(starting to see a bit of a trend with British series?) I'm a sucker for 70s and 80s music and it's generally a very funny show. You also really start to care about the characters. Gene Hunt is the Manliest Man in all of television. No objections.
They're also both sort of weird.

And maybe that's enough recommendations for today. Go buy a season or two, now.

I'm not usually big on TV, but my buddy shared this, and it seemed to good not to pass along.

Needless to say, this will be the best thing to ever happen to animation.

That looks pretty cool. When does that air, cause I'm interested in watching it.

Unfortunately they had to put the trailer to Black Eyed Peas music. Guile's theme would have been more fitting..

Good God, I've just regressed back to my childhood. Watching cartoons of celebrities fighting crime with a group of diverse children.

If there's a moral at the end of each episode I will be so happy.
