Haven't had TV in a long time.

Oh, I have a TV (a lot of people ask "How do you not have a TV?!"), but I haven't had any 'service' on it. Don't particularly need it, though, as it exists for movies/video games exclusively. Or it would if Kip's monitor didn't die and he didn't hook his computer to it. Now it's just a giant 600 dollar computer monitor.

Used to love me some cartoons and stuff way back when Saturday Morning meant something and it wasn't all on demand 24/7. Back when we had 2 channels and if the President was on both your day was destroyed, and we had to walk uphill in snow both ways everywhere we went with no shoes.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Metalocalypse? I haven't fangirled this hard over a series for years.

Can't wait until the third album comes out so we can finally hear the full version of that song. Also I wish I could make gifs- I so need one of Pickles playing his drums at 0:37 Laughing

The Royal Wedding is on Friday! Who here is watching it? There's a predicted worldwide audience of 2.4 billion people for the event, making it the highest viewing figure in TV history. And roughly a third of the world's population.

I'm such a bloody royalist, so I'll be watching Smile Just the ceremony though; I think I can give watching celebrities and minor royals finding their seats a miss...

The Diamond Jubilee is next year, and the Palace have admitted they're using it as a rehearsal for the Queen's funeral...

There's rumours that the succession might skip over Prince Charles, since Prince William is insanely popular. Plus he's a lovely bloke. It might happen since the succession rules are possibly being changed soon, so firstborns are next in line regardless of gender and Catholics might be allowed in, so who knows.

I'll be watching! I don't think those ratings are optimistic, I mean, it'll be on in all the Commonwealth countries I presume - and the US, too, despite not being Commonwealth... It's on about 4 channels here in Australia, and bear in mind we only have about 9 channels (that includes the weird digital ones that mostly show reruns of shows from the 80s and 90s). But I'll probably be watching, especially since the Chaser's doing a commentary.

I chanced to glance on SBS yesterday and saw the final of Junior Eurovision 2010. I actually got invited to a Eurovision party, heh. I probably won't go cause it looks like my ex will be there, but I'll definately be watching Eurovision because it looks exciting and I've wanted to be able to sit down and watch it for years.

We get it delayed here, so no doubt I'll have had the winner spoiled, but yeah. Razz

The law's been there for centuries, and you can see the logic behind it; all Catholics answer to the Pope. So if the monarch is Catholic that means the Pope has power over the monarch. In the olden days especially they only had to threaten excommnication and the country ceases to be an independent nation, merely a pupper state of the Vatican. After centuries of fighting between Protestants/Catholics that generally resulted in churches/followers being burnt every time someone new took the throne you can see why people were worried about that sort of thing in times gone by. That and the past millenia of European history has been mainly branches of Christianity squabbling with each other.

The law's outdated, yes, and nowadays Britain's so secular no one would give a stuff about what the Royals believe in. But it would still cause a load of drama- first of all with the established Church itself (who becomes Keeper of the Faith?) and internationally. Dear God, the fallout from southern Ireland would be catastrophic. So the argument is really whether to make things fairer or to not rock the boat. I think we're fairly safe for at least two generations though Razz

That is indeed the logic behind it. In America when John F. Kennedy was running for election (him being Catholic) people feared that he would answer to the Pope, thus giving more power to the Pope. JFK addressed the issue directly stating somewhere along the lines of, "That isn't going to happen." So I guess people just dealt with it.

But like you said,

So, how lovely was the Royal Wedding? I watched from just before the ceremony to the balcony appearance. It really was an amazing event, from the splendour to the locations to the millions of wellwishers; give us credit, despite all our faults nobody does pomp and ceremony like the British.

Personal highlights for me were:

-The pageboys, daaaaaaaww
- Westminister Abbey is a beautiful place anyway, and with the trees inside as well it was perfect.
- Harry looking far more nervous than his brother as they greeted the guests; you'd think he was the one getting married!
- Charles snubbing Phillip as he and the Queen arrived, oh boy!
- The Queen surreptitiously wiping away a tear at the end. She may be a monarch but in the end she's still a proud grandmother.
- DAT DRESS
- How William and Kate left Buckingham Palace

The absolute pinnacle for me however was when the entire Abbey sang Jerusalem. I think my heart might have burst a little from patriotic pride.

So, who else saw it? What did you think?

Hehehe, I loved the wedding. I thought the ceremony was beautiful. Kate looked absolutely stunning (and let's not mention Pippa, hnnnngh). Harry's shoulder pads were massive, he looked a bit awkward, and I swear he was chatting up Pippa Middleton, hehehehe. WTF was up with Beatrice's headpiece? But apart from that, yes.
I liked how the camera focused on the two queens in the audience. No doubt as to whether Sir Elton was there. Razz

Bamping.

Last night I watched Planet of the Apemen: Battle for Earth. Despite the completely stupid title it was actually a rather good documentary on human evolution. There have been loads of different species of hominids (14 in our own genus alone), but yet Homo sapiens is the only one alive today. Why did we survive when all our cousins perished? Not only that but until just recently mankind lived alongside several different species of humans. The series looks at a particular hominid species, compares them to our own and speculates what happened between us using expert interviews and dramatic reinactments.

First episode was on Homo erectus. Argueably they're the most successful species of hominid ever, far outlasting anything else. Because holy shit these guys were hardcore. The programme actually described them as 'wolves with knives'. They were bigger and stronger than us, all ran like olympic athletes due to their leg structure, used fire and built weapons. Needless to say the humans in the reinactment spent most of the show bricking themselves and trying not to get killed. It's actually pretty nice to see a documentary on human evolution where Homo sapiens isn't portrayed as some evil savage killing all the nice innocent other species for a change.

Next week it's on the Neanderthals, whoo!

I'd recommend watching it if any of you get the chance. Thought it was pretty good.

Oooh, I was literally looking for this thread yesterday!

I am getting outraged over a kids show. Probably nobody will care except maybe Weldar, but I watched Bananas in Pyjamas a lot as a little kid, and now my sisters are at the age of watching it.

Bananas in Pyjamas is basically a kids show about two bananas, wearing pyjamas, who have short misadventures with their friends the teddies and the conniving shopkeeper, Rat in the Hat. It's all people in costume, too, adding to the charm I suppose.

Anyway, it's now being redone in shitty 3D animation. Man, why they gotta ruin my childhood like that?

Also on a grown-up note, my favourite music quiz show is finishing up after this year. It's all I even watch on TV these days. ;-;
(except there is a channel that plays reruns of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, so I've been watching those.)
