Re: Zombie Thread

Post  Raya on Thu May 10, 2012 2:05 pm

Just found out there's a company in the UK called Zed Events, who run zombie survival events. Essentially you and your friends are given a short survival briefing and a gun, then are let loose in a shopping mall full of zombies, with the goal to get out alive/not be eaten.

I think I've just found the place for my hen/stag do :3

Send Spont in first, casually stroll through it 10 minutes later, because all the zombies are gone.

I never even knew this thread existed.....first thought is avos I wouldn't be caught dead wearing those clothes Razz sandles and long dress type clothes are impractical. Also one weapon of choice that wasn't really mentioned is a bow. Ammo for that is a lot easier to make than for a gun and can also be retrieved if needed. And like perry I'm kind of a sword fan. They are very multipurpose and if you are trained with them can be very effective. And no worries about ammo there.

Swords are practically useless. You can't puncture a brain let alone sever a head unless you're really strong, well trained, AND lucky. Not to mention melee weapons are always risky seeing as the closer you get to a zombie, the easier a chance of becoming infected NOT just from a bite, but also from ANY zombie bloods/fluids that find their way into an open cut or your mouth.

Chainsaws are in fact completely useless in the zombie apocalypse.

If you had to go for a melee weapon I think something blunt is gonna be much more effective, not gonna get stuck or require upkeep and it;s probably easier to cave in a skull than sever a head, plus it's not too hard to at least get a crippling blow to get some distance. Melee's still not a great idea but yeah swords or chainsaws are bad choices.

If you only could pick one, crowbar all the way, not only can you hit and run, but you can also use it for anything a normal crowbar can do. making it more use useful than say a machete. Better to think more than just killing zombies.

What kind of zombies are we talking about? Because outside of resident evil or L4D style then the perfect zombie fighting suit would have a dry suit & gasmask interior with a medieval suit of armor as an exterior, the weapon is a simple metal baseball bat. No ammo and total protection with mobility as the only sacrifice.

The best anti-personnel ammo would be hollow point rounds due to the deformation when it hits the target causing severe damage that it it doesn't kill the zombie should halt it's progress. Also bird and deer shot are useless at the necessary distance, so slugs or nothing.

Wearing a suit of armor while walking around all the time will make you hungry and thirsty much faster. Which is a much bigger threat than zombies.

Best thing for it would probably be a spiked mace. Most movies show that blunt trauma can take them out (Shaun of the Dead they even killed one with an ashtray). It's got good momentum and durability. Only downside is if you get cornered or caught in a crowd, in which case you'd need a secondary weapon. A pistol would be useful in close quarters but only to a certain point. Having knives or a blade could work all right if you have fast reflexes and don't mind stabbing someone in the eye.

One thing to watch out for is repeated use. I know a bat of mace can be useful and durable, but it won't do you any good if you get too tired to lift the thing in the first place.

But DRTJR the important question is. If you're buying medieval body armour do you need a breastplate since you're a man?

I said this the first time he brought it up, and I'll say it again.

why the fuck would you get plate armor when you can just get shark-proof chainmail?

It's still a dumb idea because of weight and noise, but like, if you're going to wear armor wear something that's designed to stop sharks and doesn't weigh your own body weight.

Honestly, cloth or leather would work just as well. I mean if it gets to the point that they have the ability to just bite through it, you're screwed anyway.

wasn't the protective arm thingy in walking dead made of leather? it seemed to work quite well. Also come to think of it even stuff like riot gear would be way better than plate mail. riot shields could come in handy. light weight and protective too....

Plate Armor is bulky, hard to transport, heavy, loud and time-consuming to put on. Not to bring up the care required for it, so it won't rust and so you have a halfway decent range of movement while wearing it.

Not the mention, you need to be pretty damn fit to wear that for an extended period of time, even chainmail would be pretty bad. That stuff is heavy it will start to wear you down pretty quickly. Leather is pretty good choice, can still probably stop a bite and pad some blows. You'd probably better off with no armour than in medieval plate really.
