Post #500 in the thread, heh. Time for roles!

-------------------------

Townie

Role: Raya
Player: Fedaykin

You're Raya, leader of this ragtag bunch. You've sworn to get your friends back home safely but things are spiralling out of control. You're trying your best to keep everyone safe but against such odds how can you protect them? And with this incessant voice in your mind baying for carnage and bloodshed it's only a matter of time until you break...

You start the game as a vanilla townie with no powers. However, once the third non-mafian has died you will finally snap and your powers will activate. What are they? You'll just have to wait and find out.

In addition you know that the Fedaykin role- played by JGH27- is innocent. They know the same of you.

Once the power was activated: Your morning cup of tea is interrupted by the devastating news. Another of your friends, dead. Someone else you failed to protect. No more, you must make a stand. Your breathing becomes harsh, the blood stirs in your veins, and somewhere, somewhere in the back of your mind, the roaring begins to grow.

You are now the vigilante. During the night you may target and kill another player.

In addition, once during the game you may make a single, devastating attack. This attack will utterly destroy your target and consume them, body and soul. The attack is unblockable, unpreventable and cannot be redirected. That player is completely removed from the game; they cannot be revived, spoken to nor interacted with in any way.

This attack will destroy what little is left of your humanity. You will become a feral, bestial creature unable to tell friend from foe and no longer caring, so long as the taste of blood fills your senses. You must kill every night and your kill target is randomised. You also lose the ability to send PMs. Your alignment changes to None. Choose wisely...

Poor Fed didn’t have much luck this game. He consistently killed townies, then on the night he targeted Q he couldn’t decide on his regular attack or his unstoppable, but went with his regular attack. Q of course survived and Fed died soon after, leaving him cursing in the afterlife for not going for the unstoppable! Since Fed rarely draws suspicion I thought he’d do well in this role, but he claimed vig and the mafia found out early, so his days were numbered. If he’d have killed Q the game would have worked out very differently indeed.

-------------------------

Role: Fedaykin
Player: JGH27

You're Fedaykin. Crossing into this world killed you but you got better. Sort of. You're now a lich, complete with all the complications of being one of the walking dead. You've elected yourself as Raya's bodyguard and confidant; your legendary undead toughness should come in handy. And, perhaps by allying with her, you can prove yourself to the others...

Your undead constitution means your body can shrug off wounds that would slay a living person. You can survive the first kill placed upon you, be it a lynch, a mafia kill etc. A second attack however will kill you.

You also have the bodyguard role: in the night you can declare you're protecting another player. Any attacks on them will target you instead. Non-killing abilities will still go through. Your ability to survive the first kill applies when protecting.

In addition you know that the Raya role- played by Fedaykin- is innocent. They know the same of you.

J was very quiet at the start of the game and I feared the worst, but he was soon active behind the scenes. He successfully protected Fed from a kill and continued to protect TD for the rest of the game. This didn’t come to much as the mafia chose other targets and, right at the endgame, Q correctly predicted the block and acted accordingly, managing to slay him. Still, he very much filled the role of the ardent bodyguard.

-------------------------

Role: Avalanche
Player: Weldar

You're Avalanche, the party's white mage. What you lack in combat prowess you make up for in magic. Your magic can knit bones together and heal the most grievous of wounds, and you've rapidly learnt to channel your focus into blasts of raw holy power. You can't save everyone, this you've painfully learnt, but perhaps you can make the difference…

You have the doctor role: in the night phase you can choose and protect a player from all attacks that phase.

Aside from the first night Weldar protected himself every night, although he was killed by an unblockable. Despite his powers not doing much we was very successful behind the scenes, building up an alliance and doing a lot of good, although things fell apart after his death.

-------------------------

Role: Perry
Player: Surgepox

You are Perry, the faun. You've gained a new and powerful body in this world and you seem to be very good at smashing things. But something seems to be missing, like an emptiness inside your heart. Perhaps you'll find the answers you seek when you finally meet others of your kind. Until then you'll stand proud with the others and take on all those who stand against you.

You have very low tolerance for all this bullshit. Once during the game you can end the day phase early. The day will end as soon as I receive your PM. Whoever has the most votes at that point will be lynched.

In addition, once during the game you can end the night phase early. The night will end as soon as I receive your PM. The day will automatically roll round and any actions not received will not go ahead.

Surge never got to call teatime during the game. He went inactive for a while so didn't do much in the open. Saying that him dying bought the town an extra day, because if he'd managed to get Req lynched the town would have turned on him the next day. If he had used his night time teatime the townies could have potentially won the game Day 10; TD would have been aware of the power’s existence, got his vote in quick when it was just him and Q left and ended the day phase, getting Q lynched. Sadly TD had no idea, hence it never happened.

-------------------------

Role: Snake
Player: Requiem

You're Snake, the sneaky bastard. Your talent at hiding in plain sight has manifested itself in the ability to become invisible. Well, not invisible per se; more that people simply don't notice you're there. And in war that can come in exceedingly handy...

You're the tracker. In the night you can declare you're following another player. You will get a list of everyone who interacted with that player during that phase.

In addition you cannot be scanned or watched. Any attempts to scrutinise you will be declared 'inconclusive'.

Poor Req got constantly screwed around with by DRTJR. He came under a fair amount of suspicion during the game, which Q used to his advantage to get him lynched. Funnily enough Req was one of the only living players to correctly call out Q, but sadly it didn’t prevent his lynch.

-------------------------

Role: Weldar
Player: Snake

You're Weldar, master of illusions. You can summon up illusions to distract your opponent and make them believe in things that aren't there. They might not perhaps stand up to close scrutiny, but in the midst of battle a second of distraction may save your life.

You're the bus driver. In the night phase you may declare the names of two players; these players essentially swap places for the duration of the phase. Any actions targeted at player A will instead target player B and vice versa.

Snake dicked over so many players on the first night it was unbelievable. Nearly everybody targeted Q but instead found their powers focused on TJ! Sadly he did die before causing further shenanigans. Had he survived he would have likely predicted kill targets and had a lot of fun swapping them around.

-------------------------

Role: Camilla
Player: Sahrimnir

You're Camilla, the shapeshifter. Although physically lacking in combat you're able to shift your appearance and disguise yourself as another person. You've yet to master the art which can lead to some sticky and embarrassing situations, but the benefits of stealing another's face can far outweigh the consequences...

During the day you can shapeshift into another player. This will last until the dawning of the next day. Whilst shifted you gain the abilities of that player, though you will only know how to activate the power, not what it does (for instance, the detective/doctor/vigilante etc will be 'target another player'). In addition you will also gain their alignment, but for vote counting purposes you still count as a townie (so shifting into a mafian will not count towards the number of mafia players left alive). Be careful: if you die whilst shifted your alignment will show up as what you currently are!

I love roles where you can copy other players' powers but not know what they are. It seemed obvious to make this Camilla's ability. Sah never used it though and died before doing anything. I was kinda hoping he’d copy a mafian before he died, just for the panic it would cause on both sides when he turned up as mafia.

-------------------------

Role: Omicron
Player: Avos

You're Omicron, the archer. With your unerring aim you're deadly at long range. Most enemies assume that like most archers you're useless at close combat and eagerly seek to close the gap. Unfortunately for them, if they dare try, they'll be getting flaming nunchucks to the face.

You are the bomb. If you are targeted by a kill you will take down the person who killed you.

I was pleasantly surprised with how Avos played this game. On the first day he sent out PMs claiming to be the doctor in an attempt to entice the mafia to kill him, and it certainly caused some worried discussion as they correctly suspected he might be the bomb. I suspect this was why he acting oddly in the main thread, again trying to tempt people to kill him. He was certainly doing some clever plans behind the scenes. Sadly once Q was the only 'mafian' left his powers became a hindrance to the town, as Q himself was immune and only TD had access to any killing powers.

-------------------------

Role: Minby
Player: TJ

You're Minby, the scout. Your running ability has manifested itself into incredible speed. In addition you've also gained a scouter, allowing you to see all the details of your surroundings and those that are in it.

You're the detective. During the night phase you can target another player and scan them, learning what their alignment is.

Poor TJ really was the whipping boy this game. He nearly got lynched twice and when he finally scanned a mafian he got roleblocked AND killed. He was unfortunate in drawing so much attention right at the start of the game, but he did manage to avoid the worst of it for a long time. Shame that luck didn’t last.

-------------------------

Role: TD260
Player: Minby

You're TD, a jack of all trades, though lacking in confidence. You've made a pact with a spirit, granting you the ability to perform things you couldn't have possibly achieved without. Of course, great power comes at a great price, but to save your friends no sacrifice is too great...is it?

You have a variety of powers and you may use one a night. However, each power also has a drawback which will apply until stated.

Scan: You may scan another player as though you were a detective. However, for the rest of the night and the following day your alignment will show up as mafia, even though you are still part of the town.

Protect: You may protect another player as though you were a doctor. However, for the rest of the night you yourself cannot benefit from any form of protection whatsoever. All kills directed at you will count as unblockable.

Kill: You may kill another player as though you were the vigilante. However, you will also become a lightning rod for the rest of the night and all actions will be drawn towards you.

Final Sacrifice: The greatest power comes at the greatest cost: the sacrifice of your life and soul. During the night you may shut down the entire mafia: they cannot kill and lose their abilities for the rest of the night; effectively they've all been roleblocked. They also cannot be protected in any way. The price, however, is your life. You automatically die at the end of phase.

Minby had no luck this game. Every night he used the scan ability and every night he got screwed over. His first scan on Q got bussed to TJ, giving him a false innocent result. His second was on TJ, not realising he'd already scanned him, then on Req who couldn't be scanned. He wasn’t active in the thread, but if he'd got a mafian it might have been different.

-------------------------

Role: Requiem
Player: TD260

You're Requiem, the wraith. You've gained the ability to interact with the souls of those who are lost. You've yet to uncover the extent of your powers but be warned, those who walk in twilight may soon find themselves lost from the light...

You have the ability to speak to dead players. During the night phase send me a PM with a message for the dead player you wish to speak to and I will send it them. That player will not know it's you who contacted them. If they choose to send a reply I will forward it to you.

In addition you may bind the souls of dead players to you. In the night you may target a dead player and take part of their essence. You will gain their ability, though you may use it only once. You can only absorb one ability at a time, so if you chose to take another you will replace your previous one.

TD really came into his own this game. After a slow start he started talking with the dead and tactically choosing which powers to absorb and use. On Day 4 it looked like the town would steamroll the game, but after Weldar's death TD failed to capitalise on the information he had and was manipulated to hell and back by Q. Although he played logically he got tangled up in his own logic, which proved his downfall. Still, by the endgame he'd made himself into a power role and aside from being played by Q he did very well this game.

-------------------------

Role: Sahrimnir
Player: DRTJR

You're Sahrimnir, the paladin. Although your holy powers are not as powerful as Avalanche's you make up for it in superior combat skills. You also have a habit of stripping off. What can you say, you love being on show.

You're the roleblocker. By taking off your shirt (or something else, be creative) you can block another player. For the rest of the night they cannot use any of their powers.

DRTJR continued to maintain his reputation of being a liability to his team by repeatedly screwing over the town. He stopped TJ getting his scan on Perry, repeatedly blocked the innocent Req and didn't read his PMs. He also came out with some incredibly stupid shit such as claiming the demon Nimisch must be the DRTJR role. Q suggested that since I wasn't in the game to target he was a bit lost as to what to do Razz

-------------------------

Role: Quaetam
Player: Ansem

You're Quaetam, former villain known as the Hierophant. You arrived in this world months before the others and managed to work your way into a position of power. Though your intentions were good there is innocent blood on your hands. Though you may never forgive yourself for what you've done, perhaps you can one day achieve redemption...

You have the doublevote ability. Your vote counts as 2 rather than 1. In addition, once during the game, if the lynch is tied you may have them both lynched.

Ansem's crowning moment came on day two when it looked like there was going to be a three-way tie and he declared he was using his lynch-them-all power! Much giggling was had, but last minute vote switches saw it was simply a double lynch instead. As the game went on his double vote started growing in power and looked like it may have swung things for the town, but sadly he was slain by Fedaykin. Largely his own fault since he claimed third party for some reason. Still, it caused a lot of puzzlement when he did turn up innocent.

Mafia
The mafia forum

Role: Victor
Player: Perry

You are Victor, first of the great Generals and right hand man of the High Commander himself. A swordsman beyond compare, tens of thousands have fallen beneath your blade. Such is your loyalty to your master you will slaughter your way through all of existence if he so commands it. He has ordered you to clear the way so he may gain that which he seeks, and you will go to the ends of the earth to achieve that goal.

Knowing your enemy and their weaknesses is a major part of battle. In the night you may either send your spies to watch a player and learn who they interact with (essentially a tracker role) or you may study them and gain some idea of what their powers are (a rolescanner). You can do one of the other, not both on the same night.

Perry didn’t make much of his usual effort this game, also causing some drama with Q in the thread, but he did get some important information to the mafia. He scanned Avalanche before the latter’s power had activated, and from the result correctly deduced that Av’s power needed to be activated somehow. In the end Perry got scanned, publically called out but didn’t fight back, resulting in his lynch.

-------------------------

Role: Dunya
Player: Viero

You are Dunya, second of the great Generals. Beneath that great beauty lies an ugly soul and your cruelty is the stuff of horrific legends. Men are but pawns to you, and much like a cat you enjoy toying with them and making them beg before you break their necks and snuff out their souls.

You're the roleblocker. During the night you can block another player, and for the rest of the night that cannot use any of their powers.

Viero died very quickly and so didn’t make much of an impact. His sole block, on TJ, got deflected onto Q and so nothing came of it. Since the lynch was a tie he would have survived, but Ansem declared a doublelynch and cut his game drastically short.

-------------------------

Role: Nimisch
Player: Eisen

You are Nimisch, third of the great Generals. A powerful demon, your entire existence is nothing but the thrill of battle and the suffering of others. Thousands have fallen beneath your claws and blade. The only being you have ever bowed your head to is that of the High Commander. For in him you see something that even demons fear...

All kills you make are unblockable and gory.

Poor Eisen. He tried incredibly hard this game and I’m really pleased with the amount of effort he put in. Since his English isn’t the best he struggled to understand the scheming that was going on with his mafia buddies, but he really did make a huge effort. He had the biggest kill count in the game but gladly stepped aside to let Q perform a kill to prove his innocence. Sadly, poor naïve Eisen promptly got backstabbed.

-------------------------

Role: Ernstrad
Player: Smashbro

You are Ernstrad, fourth of the great Generals. A cunning magic user, you say half of what you mean and nothing of what you intend. The others may see you as flighty and insincere, but you've seen sights and performed acts that would turn the stomach of even the most corrupt of demons. And your lust for power is equal only to the depths you will sink to achieve it...

You have the ability to speak to dead players. During the night phase send me a PM with a message for the dead player you wish to speak to and I will send it them. That player will not know it's you who contacted them. If they choose to send a reply I will forward it to you.

When I rolled this I honestly didn’t realise that Smash had already had the deathspeaker role multiple times- if I had I’d have rerolled him! Although Smash is a great player he didn’t get much use out of his ability and got lynched out of nowhere before he could do proper damage in the main thread.

-------------------------

Third Party

Role: The High Commander
Alignment: Overlord
Player: Quaetam

You're the High Commander, the mastermind and undisputable ruler of the Nameless Army. Like a demon from hell you've rampaged across the Southlands, crushing their defences like blades of grass underfoot. Now your wrath has turned to the Northlands. But it's not a mission of conquest, oh no. You're searching for something, something very important, and once you achieve it…there shall be none who shall oppose you.

Although you are working with the mafians you do not share their alignment. You have a unique alignment, Overlord. The other mafians do not know this. After all, they're merely your pawns, there but to serve your greater purpose. You are a survivor- your goal is to be the last person standing at the end. The only way to be the outright winner is to be the sole player left. You do not count towards the number of mafia players left alive in terms of gaining the majority vote

You may perform the mafia kill, like a regular mafia player. However, you can PM me and privately change your target before the kill happens. After all, you've got your own agenda to pursue.

As an added bonus you're also immune to non-lynches. You can only be killed via the lynch or by unblockable attacks. Better be careful, eh?

Oh Q, that magnificent bastard. He understandably didn't make much of an effort at the start of the game, dealing with personal issues, but when he threw himself into the game he completely savaged it- most notably swinging round a lynch he was leading by every vote to nil in three hours, escaping and getting an innocent lynched instead! He maintained his charade right until the end, spinning the townies’ words to get them lynched and even backstabbing Eisen to ‘prove’ his innocence. The big turning point was Day 9, where it all hinged on persuading the others to lynch Req rather than himself. He managed it and from then the game was essentially in the bag. This really was an excellent game for Q and he proved once again why he’s the best mafia player on here.

As a note, my favourite moment had to be Q sending his ‘role PM’, and writing it in British English…which Req correctly noticed and announced Q wasn’t cunning enough to think about doing that! Marvellous.

-------------------------

Role: Ansem
Alignment: None
Player: Avalanche

You are Ansem, the necromancer. This world has not been kind to you. For saying you're here to save everyone you've been treated like scum, shunned by those who fear your dark magicks. And worse, that one person you dared to care about has betrayed you, crushed your heart like it was worthless. But the dark magic is stirring within you, and you realise that if you embrace it you can have all the power you've ever lusted after. And with that power comes women, riches, unbridled hedonism...and revenge.

At the moment you're teetering on the abyss. You currently have no alignment, but the slightest push will decide your path for you. If you are killed by the town you will survive the kill and defect to the mafia. If you are killed by the mafia you will survive the kill and defect to the town. You may also gain a little extra once your choice has been made.

If you don't gain an alignment, you win by being the last player standing.

Avalanche is always brilliant at survivor roles and again he played very well. Realising he could essentially survive a kill he taunted the mafia constantly, attempting to activate his abilities. This lead the mafia to speculate on what he needed, including suggesting giving him a codename just in case it was saying his name that did it! He avoided being targeted for most of the game and it looked like he may very well have to win the game as a survivor, until he was lynched. Originally getting lynched would have made him a mafian, but then I realised that mafians would be voting for him too, and it was unfair to base it on the last person voting/decisive vote, so made him third party instead.

Incidentally, as a townie he would have been able to revive a single player, as a mafian he was a poisoner who could prevent the dead from talking (taking their souls) and getting lynched made him an SK.

Re: Mafia 17: Dark Before The Dawn- Night 10- FINALE

Post  Raya on Fri Mar 09, 2012 1:55 pm

Edited and Dropped Roles

A few roles were changed or dropped altogether for balance and space issues. I’ve included them here for interest’s sake.

Avalanche
In addition to doctor powers: On nights when you protect a person other than yourself you will also be the bomb; if you are targeted by a killing power you will take down the person who slayed you. Note this only applies when you are protecting another person, not yourself.

This was inspired by Av being able to use holy magic in the RP as well as healing magic. I thought it a nice way to encourage the doctor to protect others and also give the killer a nasty surprise. Dropped because of the Omicron role since it was unfair to have two bombs in the game.

-------------------------

Requiem
In addition to death speaking powers: In addition, once per game you may allow a dead player to possess you. Declare it in the night and they will possess you during the following day and night phase (for instance, if you declared it in night 2 they would be active for day 3 and night 3). For all intents and purposes that player is 'alive' again for the next day and night phase. They can use their original powers, post in the thread and vote as normal, although they do not count towards the total number of players for their side. Whilst possessed you yourself may not vote, post or send PMs: you don't have a body to do that! When the possession ends you will be able to act as normal.

Any actions targeted at the 'revived' player will instead target you.

This was my original plan for Req’s ability to interact with ghosts and I thought it would be amusing to see the reactions of the dead apparently coming back to life for a phase. This could have been very important strategically if TD via his deathspeaking knew what their powers were. Dropped because I realised this was way too OP.

-------------------------

TJ
TJ was originally going to have Omi’s power, the bomb, due to his fire magic. I couldn’t decide on an ability to represent Omi’s archery skills, so in the end reluctantly dropped the TJ role and gave his abilities to Omi.

-------------------------

Ernstrad
In addition to death speaking powers: In addition, once during the game you may temporarily bring a dead player back to life during the night phase. They will be alive for the following day and automatically die at the end of the following night. Since souls cannot be rejoined to their earthly shells after death you're merely reanimating the dead tissue. The resurrected player will have their alignment changed to Zombie but retain their original abilities (restrictions may apply depending on the ability).

More false resurrection shenanigans as a counterbalance to the Requiem role. Used well this would have sowed so much chaos as people were turning up as zombies. As hilarious as it would have been this was dropped because like the edited Req role it was a bit too OP.

-------------------------

Ansem
You have no alignment: you're a third party. Like a survivor you win by being the last player standing. But you're not alone in your cause.

During the night you can resurrect a dead player. That player will become your puppet. That player is bound to you and can now only win alongside you. They will retain their abilities (though there may be some restrictions depending on the ability itself) but their alignment will change to None. You may only have one puppet at a time, although if a puppet dies you can resurrect a new one. Essentially, you have the Manipulative Bastard role. Note that if both you and your puppet are the only players left alive you still win. If you die the magic holding your puppet together unravels and they themselves will die alongside you.

You may communicate freely with your puppet at your unique forum:

Fuck me the Ansem role. It went through so many variations it was ridiculous. It was a Manipulative Bastard, a SK, a cult leader, a reviver, all sorts. I just couldn’t pin down what would match Ansem’s drama in the game. Originally I had settled on this alternate MB role, where he manipulates the dead players instead. Dropped because things got a little silly and unwieldy.

-------------------------

The Hierophant
Alignment: Manipulative Bastard

You are the Hierophant, manipulative bastard extraordinaire. You use people like pawns, nothing but playthings to further your own ambitions. And what are your ambitions? Survival, of course. Let the town and the mafia squabble amongst themselves, too stubborn and proud to unite against the other. You intend to emerge from this war alive, and you're willing to play the deadliest game to achieve it.

You have the Manipulative Bastard role. You may target a player during the night, and that player will become your pawn. That player is bound to you and can now only win alongside you. They will retain their abilities (though there may be some restrictions depending on the ability itself) but their alignment will change to Pawn. You may only have one pawn at a time, although if a pawn dies you can choose a new one.

You win the game by being the last player left alive. Note that if both you and your pawn are the only players left alive you still win, and all your pawns win alongside you. If you die your pawn will die alongside you.

You may communicate freely with your puppet at your unique forum:

I love the MB role and was a bit sad I didn’t get to use this. Would have been a lot of fun. Even funnier there would have been both a Hierophant and a Quaetam role, but also the Hierophant player would have very likely chosen to make Q the player as a puppet…so the Hierophant would be manipulating Q, WAT. Dropped because of space and because people were complaining about this role.

-------------------------

Bread
Alignment: Delicious

You are bread, a tasty and filling snack. Literally, bread. Everyone sees you as a joke but one day, one day, you will show them all just who the true evil in this world is…

You are a mighty one man mafia. Just like the regular mafia you may make a kill during the night phase. Also, you smell lovely and taste good with melted butter. You win being the last player standing.

If you’re in the RP you’ll probably get this joke. I thought it would be a huge curveball to have bread be an actual role. It’s a mafian rather than a SK because I thought it was hilarious. Dropped because of space and because it’s silly.

Ok.

Not a kill swap. He just had godfather immunities. Any mafian making the kill can change their target from what they declared, really. I just spelt it out in the role PM since I thought it was relevent.

Ok.

There were about three scanning roles this game.

Had any of them scanned me I'd have come up ALIGNMENT: OVERLORD. Check and mate. Fuck, if YOU hadn't saved my ass night 1, I'd have been lynched day 2 when Minby outed his scan on me.

I'm pretty sure that compensates for nightkill immunities and a killswap Razz

Also, this game... This was glorious. I've said this before but you're awesome, Raya.

Avalanche's taunting I still didn't quite understand though. Where were those hints? Even though I was mafia, my entire argument against you was pretty valid. I saw no hints or taunts or anything along those lines in those PMs.

Also who complained about the Manipulative_Bastard? I thought people liked that role :< I'm glad someone other than me actually wanted to use it, I've been waiting on it for so long! Interesting take that you'd have them flip Alignment: Pawn though. I myself usually have them just come up their original alignmenti n the reveal even if they actually are aligned to win with the MB.

The Ansem-MB is also brilliant.

I got it worse than you know Raya...

In this game I had to fend off everyone for no good reason, and when I made my scan it said "Someone thought they knew the truth" which I thought might invalidate my scan.

I decided I had to tell someone I who I had scanned and what came up (Snake, Townie) but because of my precarious position I felt it best to roleclaim in private as well, since Roles didn't seem to be revealed.

I decided to share with someone who seemed to be actively defending me. That person was Q.

I roleclaimed cop to Q.

So unlucky.

Forgot the mafia forum link, added it to the mafia roles post.
