Brawl a la carte

Post  Fedaykin on Thu May 10, 2012 11:03 am

I figured, that we still don't have anything like this topic before, so here it goes:

The idea behind this thread is to share your favourite recipes and/or cooking experiences. Doesn't need to stop with cooking, bakery and cocktails are a great addition too!

Let me kick this one off with a little video a very good friend and I did years back, it contains beer and pork steak Razz

(the typo is there as nostalgia)

I don't cook much, but this is one of my favorite things to make when I am really hungry, in a hurry, and can't find any leftovers to nuke. My friends think its really gross, one of them compared it to catfood, but I really like it.

Re: Brawl a la carte

Post  Raya on Thu May 10, 2012 1:38 pm

Is this thread perhaps inspired by my cottage pie Fed? Razz

My cooking is pretty basic; I have better things to do with my time than stand at a stove for hours on end like a good woman. Saying that I make a damn good spaghetti bolognese, it's my signature dish. Any of you come to stay I'm totally making it for you.

I'm starting to get a bit more adventurous, since on Fridays my partner and I cook meals for each other so it's a nice chance to try out making new things. If a little hit and miss, hee.

This thread's timing is marvellous.

Some of you have probably heard I'm hosting a Eurovision party because I'm a sad individual because it's the greatest show on earth. I'm making up some party food from any of the eligible nations. So, thought I'd ask, can anyone think of some dishes I can make? I'm thinking blinis stuffed with something for Russia, enchiladas for Spain (sshh, my friends won't know), pasta for Italy and gravlax for Sweden. Any more ideas for native party foods? Note: space muffins for the Netherlands is not an option.

Fry an alligator. It's fantastic, especially if you get a little Cajun injector thing going. We pump the things so full of spices, the stuff starts oozing out of it. I'm hungry now.
(I realize, this might not be what your asking for, but I don't care. Throwing the suggestion out there anyways.)

Try a spanish tortilla instead, it's basically just a thick omelet with potatoes in it, pretty easy. Honestly I actually prefer a regular omelet (too thick and potato-y) for me but this is the only actual spanish food I know.

I have a reputation as being the smart one in the group. If I say enchiladas are from Spain they won't question it Razz That and they're bad at geography anyway; we played Risk once and one of them was looking for Afghanistan in South America.

@Surge/DF: I'm trying to not provide too much alcohol since most of them are driving, and since I've asked everyone to bring a drink/food of their choice I bet half of them will be lazy and go with vodka. That being said I have 30+ cans of Belgic and Danish beer in the pantry. I only drink spirits and my other half is teetotal, so they're going to waste otherwise.

@Relm: I've tried crocodile and wasn't all that impressed (tasted like beef tbh). I haven't seen any alligator burgers in the UK, it tends to be crocodile and they're a bit expensive. That and it's not a European food, it doesn't count Razz

Thanks for all the ideas guys! I'm talking plenty of notes. I've found one problem is finding food that is alright to be served cold (most Eurovision recipies I've found have been for hot food) and actually getting the right ingredients. The only ethnic foodshops around here are Indian, Chinese and Polish. That red caviar might be a bit of a problem to get a hold of...

Weldar knows about my Pad Thai. xD

I have to cook a lot more often now, spaghetti bolognaise is a thing I make every week. Pretty simple, yet more extravagant than my friends: mince, bacon, onion, garlic, capsicum if I'm not lazy, tomato soup, tomato paste, pepper, chilli, parsley and other herbs as I see fit. Simmer while cooking your pasta. Very tasty.

My mum is the queen of desserts, I'll have to get her to teach me to make macaroons.

It does look good, though Fries with a Steak is rather weird. Wouldn't a baked potato have fit in more?

Steak and chips is pretty much the default in the UK. Steak and baked potato is weird.

Funnily enough I had steak, chips and peas today. Slathered in tomato sauce like the barbarian I am. Was good Razz

god all of that is making me hungry. i always do some form of potatoes with my steaks, whether it be baked, fries, smashed or mashed potatoes (smashed for me is boiling them, usually red potatoes, then smashing 'em with a fork on my plate and eating them. mashed is mixing them with a blender till smooth, usually adding milk or whatnot to make 'em creamy. I've heard chicken stock also tastes good in mashed potatoes).

also isn't malt vinegar with chips a staple in the UK raya? my friend went to london and saw it used heavily and told me about it....i have to have it with my fries all the time now..sooo good, especially with penn station fries. dammit now i'm really hungry Razz

Meanwhile in Australia, it's steak and mashed potato Razz Or chips, or even roast potato.

Mum went to a thai cooking course last weekend so for my birthday party on Saturday night we (well, mostly her) put together golden parcels, fried rice (for the little kids) drunken noodles (like pad thai, only vegetarian and spicier), a green curry with beef and a spicy chicken dish. It was pretty great. She then succeeded in making a sponge cake that was cut in to four layers with a white chocolate icing between and around it.

Quite a successful party.

This weekend, though, I get to make things for my party with friends. I will be making macarons, red velvet cupcakes, possibly a cheesecake (I haven't decided what sort of birthday cake to make!), and then things like vegetarian quiches, sausage rolls, a whole bunch of little things, both vegetarian and not. I hope it all works out, Weldar will be able to confirm whether or not I can cook after this Razz
