Boom and Sound

Post  BoomsAreMyLife on Wed Sep 24, 2008 7:35 pm

Hey everyone! This is Luke- Boom operator on the Brawl Project.
Wanted to drop a little thread in here to offer up any answers to questions you all may have about the sound for Brawl.
I'm so happy to see such a positive response to our hard work and hope that with a little help we can finish the last parts of the story.

Thanks!
-Luke

P.S. Even though I am a professional BO, these were really long shoots and I was forced to hold the boom up for hours does anyone possibly have any techniques they would like to offer up?

Umm, hire a lackey?
You probably could, after the success of this first episode.
Beyond that, I have no clue.

Forced? Sounds evil

Umm, but usually I try to atleast keep a bend in my elbows and knees to keep the pulse going. And if the main sound I'm trying to pick up is close to the ground or if you can sneak in the mic below the frame, I would try to if it doesn't interfere with the shot.

Or maybe just jerry-rig some kind of harness together.

By the way, just out of curiosity, what's the difference between a best boy, a keygrip, and a gaffer?

To BoomsAreMyLife,

I usually try to prop it on my shoulder or on some other more convenient thing so I can use it for leverage. Kind of like a seesaw except you put enough weight on one side so you can hold a position for a long time. If you're holding it high and over your head, try resting part of it on your head. Endurance!

BoomsAreMyLife is a dangerous handle to have, by the way. Be careful using that around FBI agents.

Things to consider when holding a boomer for extended periods of time:
- The further you extend your arms, the more stress you'll place on your tendons.
- The closer to the handle end you hold the boomer, the more weight there'll be at the opposite end
- Propping a boomer against something can shift some of the weight but may make it more awkward to hold

I was going to go on to suggest ways of countering these problems but they may be obvious or you might already be doing the things I'm thinking of, it may be practical to have an additional person hold it if space allows. Though short of been allowed very brief "shake feeling out of your arms" interludes you may have to tough it out.
