if i remember correctly they're from roughly 323 million years ago (i'm just a newb to all this so i could be way off on my dates though) during the mississipian period. where we went this time was a rifting area right off the highway in a small town in my area. It had TONS of blastoids and horn coral as well as some marine lillies, brachiopods, trilobites, archimedes and one i can't remember the name of that is made of many disks that looks like a fossiled worm of sorts but clearly isn't haha. also i had mentioned to my prof that i had a friend who was a paleontologist in england and she got excited and mentioned wanting to get in touch to find some good dig sites for a certain fossils she was wanting....i can't quite remember what she was wanting though :U

Mississippian? *twitch*

That's a...huge pet peeve of mine. The Mississippian/Pennsylvanian are like Brontosaurus: they don't actually exist. They're invalid names for something that already does.

The geological periods are named after either a distinguishing feature (such as the Cretaceous being named after the large number of chalk beds it contains) or a place it's well represented in (such as the Jurassic being named after the Jura Mountains). The Carboniferous, the time period your fossils came from, was named in the 1820s after the large amount of coal beds in it.

Then about half a century later for no actual reason some American geologist decided to split it into two seperate periods and name them after US places. Despite the fact there was already a perfectly good system in place and the rest of the world doesn't use those terms, American earth scientists continued to call that time period the Mississippian and the Pennsylvanian. This complete defeats the point of having a universal standard for stratigraphy which you need for all the geo- and palaeo- sciences. For God-knows what reason they refused to use the term Carboniferous, and to make it worse then started dividing the Mississippian/Pennsylvanian into seperate stages, despite the fact the Carboniferous already IS divided into seperate stages! After years of this Carboniferous stratigraphy was turning into a huge clusterfuck with the US using one system, the rest of the world using another and no way of verifying either. Eventually the Internation Commission of Stratigraphy had to step in and set some guidelines so all the dates would line up. The Mississippian/Pennsylvanian is now designated a subsystem, which is stupid and makes no sense, but was the only way to bring the dates in line since the US still refuses to conform to the international standard.

So yeah, technically, there's no such thing as the Mississippian/Pennsylvanian.

/rant

Yeah, that has just always pissed me off. There's no sense to it, it's just a deliberate attempt to dick over stratigraphy and the whole thing should have died back in the 19th century, but it's still here screwing things up and causing trouble for everyone else. I've spent a lot of time trying to decipher published articles saying things like "The brachipod is restricted to the Middle Pennsylvanian." WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN JUST USE THE ACTUAL OFFICIAL TERM FFS

Back on track. That fossil made of disks, did it look like lots of discs stacked on top of each other? (how I used to describe it to kids I took fossil hunting was that it looked like lego blocks stacked on top of each other). If so it's probably a crinoid, a type of sea lily (though you mentioned 'marine lillies', so I'm guessing those were the crinoids?). My other guess would be a coccolith, but they weren't around then. Hmm, can you post a pic?

And haha, if your teacher wants to get in touch she can be my guest, though I have to say fossiliferous sites of Illinois aren't my area of expertise Razz I'm sure I could point her in the right direction of how to find such sites out though.

If I ever end up Illinois way you need to take me there Very Happy

MICHAEL!

Actually woke up on time for class for once. Huzzah.

Though I'm honestly starting to think of giving up and moving to the country (and eating a lot of peaches) at the end of this semester or year. Who'd have thought I'd actually want to live with my mum Razz

Idk, I can just feel myself falling off the motivation wagon again. I'm going to get things done, though. I'm going to go to classes tomorrow and do my exams and get through this. I just...bluh.

In class, so many sites are blocked. I was a week behind on my work and I'm still like, 3 weeks ahead of most of the class. At least I've spent a fair bit of time catching up so I moved through the whole PowerPoint section in all of 20 minutes and now I'm learning about Microsoft Access.

How exciting!

At least I have my daily coffee. It's better than sex, seriously. /at least I'm not as addicted to coffee as I was 2-3 weeks ago

Re: The Whatever Thread

Post  Raya on Tue Mar 05, 2013 12:31 pm

So hey, guess who got the Dinosaur Professor job?

Had the interview today, and I have to say it was a really weird one. Turned out to be a group one with four other candidates. One of them I met in the cafe beforehand and we had a nice chat. Turns out she's fairly popular in the MLP community Razz So anyway, we get called into a room and sit at some tables; me and my new friend on one, the three other people on the other. We get given a presentation on the zoo and then did some exercises. First up we had to turn to the person next to us and find out their name, an interesting fact, what their favourite animal was and why. My mind went completely blank and I couldn't think of anything interesting about myself, haha. Next up we had to draw up a poster about customer service on our tables. Then each table got given a jigsaw puzzle (Thomas the Tank Engine, age 3+ Laughing ) to complete. It quickly became apparent that some of the pieces came from a different set, and then it dawned on me what was going on. So I collected the other pieces, walked over to the other table and traded. Yup, teamwork.

Finally came our presentation, and the first person up chose the same dinosaur as me, nooooo. But my presentation went down incredibly well. I was totally on fire. Then after being sent on a quick zoo tour to stall for time, we got called back in and told who did and didn't get the job. I got it Smile

Oh, and you know we have to play the role of a character? Turns out my character's name is Roxy Fossil.

Roxy.

Fossil.

I sound like a goddamn porn star.

Problem is...still don't know if I can take the job. As awesome as this job is I still can't take it if it's going to be temporary, since I'll be unemployed afterwards. They know my concerns and said they'd discuss it and get back to me. Hopefully I shone so much they'll say they'll have another one lined up for me afterwards, but...we'll just have to see.

So yay, whoo.

Oh, sites in the UK, sure, that I do know Razz

The Archemides genus is found in the US and Europe. It might be a certain *species* of Archemides that is only found it your area.

@Spont: And just think, you were like that once Razz

Problem is Vie is that I'm an adult, and adults have to do things like pay off student debts, pay the rent, pay the bills, save up for a deposit for a house and somehow afford a wedding. Being unemployed is not really an option. Yes it'd be something that I love, but I have to think of the future.

I'm at the point with my job where I have to call them weekly to remind them I exist. I'll have to give them a call tonight, I really want to have a little bit of money so I can go shopping in Melbourne when I get there at the end of the month (it's not looking promising).

Keep at it, Roxy - I mean, Raya! The best part about it is the experience, and the fact it goes on the resume (or C.V. as we call it over here).

And on a side note - I probably know this "popular in the MLP community" person.
